    Pros

A Company culture that allows focusing on the work in front of you, with little distractions or bureaucracy.

    Cons

Complex, mature product in a challenging space makes for a business that isn't very nimble relative to a typical Silicon Valley technology company.

I have been working at Vertical Communications full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Even though the company is long past being a start-up, some of the start-up mentality is still there. Namely, a self-starter can do well at Vertical and you can guide your direction in the company. If there's something that you want to do, no one will tell you no. No one works crazy hours any more, though no one slacks off. The current CEO (Peter Bailey) is trustworthy and confident. Overall, it's a comfortable place to work.

    Cons

If you need someone to micro-manage you, this is not the company for you. If you want to work on the latest cutting-edge technology instead of delivering a stable product that hundreds of thousands of people use every day, then you should be looking at a start-up. If you don't want to deal with "old code" and worry about breaking previous features, then you want to work on an unreleased product., not one that's been shipping for 15 or so years.

    Advice to Management

The company has weathered the recession storm without too much pain, which is a comfortable place to be before the rebound. Employee communication in that area has been great.

    Pros

cool product, flexible hours, good atmosphere, employee retention is high, a lot of different technologies to learn all the time

    Cons

compensation and workload do not correspond to each other, many people balancing several projects and responsibilities, multiple simultaneous everyday tasks

    Advice to Management

need to improve sales for the company to thrive, invest in the employee training, more off-site company events and small perks

I have been working at Vertical Communications full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Vertical is very flexible with work-life balance, allowing tried-and-true employees to work from home when needed, which is a big plus. Management recognizes top talent, it's just sometimes hard to hire more top talent to accomplish everything the company needs engineering to do.

    Cons

Stock options aren't very valuable, no 401k matching, culture is old-school with high-wall cubes and a quiet atmosphere with minimal collaboration on a day-to-day basis.

    Advice to Management

The cost of better tools for engineering may be high, but considering engineers' time spent wasted because they don't have those tools is much higher - spring for high-end tools & services once in a while.

    Pros

Fast paced and amazing products. Great co-workers who are very skilled.

    Cons

Even though the product is cutting edge, it is reliant on older technologies such as Pots. It's also sensitive to the telecom cycle.

    Advice to Management

    Productize and fewer customizations.
