I have been working at Vesuvius full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent safety performance. Good benefits and advancement opportunities.

    Cons

Heavily tied to steel industry which has seen significant downturn in US markets. Internal competition with manufacturing sites in low labor cost countries makes it very difficult to keep sites in the US operating.

I worked at Vesuvius full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

above average benefits, friendly employees around

    Cons

little opportunities for career advancement, seems everyone is trying to protect him/herself, low moral

    Advice to Management

replace yourselves with someone more competent, many simply hang onto their jobs by replacing anyone who might be a threat to their position and hiring someone who is less competent

I worked at Vesuvius full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The benefits were above average, pay only OK, Physical labor has been reduced over the years with modernization. For me was 5 min from home.

    Cons

2008 they instituted a 2 tier wage system, new employees made about 5 dollars less than ones grandfathered in. this did a lot towards eroding employee morale. wage stayed stagnant for last 5 years.

    Advice to Management

Management has to look at the employees as more than replaceable tools, this was done better through the previous owner. Morale has dropped to the lowest point I have ever witnessed.

    Pros

    Some great, fun, knowledgable co-workers.

    Cons

Management is the "good old boys club". If you are not in it, this is merely a temporary position.
    Technology and systems are outdated!

    Advice to Management

    Replace ineffective managers.

I worked at Vesuvius full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good paying job with good benefits. Nice coworkers and all around fun place. Good eight hours shifts .

    Cons

Poor management with horrible attitudes. The smell of tar all day in the air. Black stuff coming out of your nose every time you blow.

    Advice to Management

    Change your attitudes toward people.

I have been working at Vesuvius full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Safety is a priority here. The hours are steady and overtime is entirely optional. The days tend to go quickly and the benefits are pretty good. The corporation cares about the overall well being of its employees. Cost of living wage increases occur on years that the company is doing well.

    Cons

Pay at the technician level leaves a little to be desired.

DIRTY. If you don't like getting your hands dirty from time to time, then this place may not be for you. Refractories are, by their nature, messy. They provide clothes for work and showers onsite in case you aren't going straight home after work and need to clean up but many might be turned away by the dirty nature.

On to management, some are good managers that know how to motivate their employees but they are very disorganized and daily priorities change by the hour at times. If you're goal oriented like me, you'll become easily frustrated by all the work that you get pulled off of and then have to scramble to wrap up at the end of the day. The other managers who only know how to motivate by negative reinforcement. They'll come up to you after you've been pushing yourself and find the one or two minor things you did wrong and this negative mindset is bleeding into the technicians there. It's created a very negative culture there at times.

    Advice to Management

Use positive reinforcement more. It's much more effective than negative reinforcement.

Open communication between management and technicians so that work priorities can be followed easier.

Also, this place could really benefit from some sort of engagement program as that helps employees form a more positive culture while improving productivity.

I have been working at Vesuvius full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Vesuvius offers a stable work environment that is Safety First and focused on Quality. The job is never boring and keeps you invested mentally. Compensation is fair.

    Cons

While safety and quality are priorities, there is a struggle to spend $$ to improve safety and quality. The amount of administrative duties are starting to out weigh the technical results. Periods of high stress are frequent.

    Advice to Management

Relax and do not be afraid to make decisions. Stalling on making a decision hurts output and erodes confidence.

I have been working at Vesuvius full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Paid holidays,Overtime for the most part. Finally taking safety seriously. Great diversity of personnel.

    Cons

No real chance of advancing in the company. Salary was not competitive to other relating jobs. Upper management and engineers do not include help or advice from workforce. Stuck working with machinery that doesn't work right . A lot of favoritism being played.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and give your workers a chance to grow with the company. Make sure your Engineers and Maintenance department can read a tape measure.
