I have been working at Viacom Media Networks as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Internships are paid, which is hard to come by in media
    - The HR department makes a huge effort to engage with interns throughout the semester and provide opportunities to help interns prepare for the job search
    - Supervisors tend to be young and very friendly
    - A diverse array of networks and departments you can be placed in

    Cons

    - Depending on your department/network, there may be significant limits to what you're actually allowed to work on or observe. This wasn't the case for me, but some of my peers have expressed these frustrations in their own departments

I have been working at Viacom Media Networks (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people who really care about each other! I've been able to build deep professional bonds and friendships. Common space has been totally revamped!

    Cons

Unsure of the future after the past year's C-Suite battles and changing Board of Directors. Communications need to be better but are on the upswing.

    Advice to Management

Compensation structure needs to be looked at to better reward the general employee population. Bring down the level of approvals to get things done.

    Pros

I've had a few entertainment industry internships before MTV, and I have enjoyed my time here. There is plenty of respect between employees, and office camaraderie is evident. As an intern, I am encouraged to ask questions and be proactive. Primarily, I read scripts, watch cuts, and carry out basic administrative tasks.

    Cons

Some of the promises made during the interview process and early days of the internship have not been followed up.

    Advice to Management

You can totally expect more out of the interns - we're here to work. It would be nice to sit in on more interesting meetings.

    Pros

A very cool place for the first few years, and you get to experience the different cultures and different age groups.

    Cons

After a few years of working there then it is all down hill when management overlooks you every time as they select there favorites individuals. Hardworking employees have no place in that company. People who kiss up 24/7 get promoted on a regular basis.

    Advice to Management

Wake up and don't ignore the real people who make the company great

    Pros

Benefits are great and the staff are generally really cool people who care about each other.

    Cons

Pay is way below going rate. Management is completely clueless. No upward mobility - if you're not in the inner circle in your department, forget ever getting a promotion. If you do get promoted, expect it to not come with a salary increase, so essentially a title change giving you more responsibilities for the same pay.

    Advice to Management

Stop living in your ivory towers making money off the backs of the people who do the real work. Help your direct reports move forward in their careers, listen to their concerns, and be available to them.
