I worked at Viacom Media Networks as an intern

    Pros

    As a designer, fun projects.

    Cons

No sense of company culture ro community, and no appreciation for its employees. You are a cog in the machine, alongside thousands of employees working to add "MTV" to their resume. Little appreciation ro recognition; you are a nobody. It is inexcusable for internships to be unpaid, at such a massive company.

    Pros

Cool working environment. Lots of young people, and all the floors have different designs. I interned with the production management department, so there were lots of cool shoots to go on-- movie premieres, American Idol events, etc.

    Cons

There are so many interns, that employees don't really know what to do with them. Most days I just sat at my desk and was bored. MTV tries to create a feeling like they were going to help outstanding interns get a job, but that is just not true. Most employees in production management stay there forever, and an openings go to friends or family.

    Advice to Management

Your internship program is too big. Make it more exclusive so the interns actually get a great experience rather than being the errand boy for everyone, including the PAs... who should be the errand boys.

I worked at Viacom Media Networks (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very cool office. Low workload (also a con). Also, being able to put MTV / Viacom on my resume led to more opportunities down the road. Incredibly friendly HR staff as well.

    Cons

Almost no useful / educational / interesting tasks were given in the CMI department internship. Despite my best efforts, I wasn't able to learn much about the industry or the company. I mostly sent off pre-written emails for an executive assistant and never even saw the head of the department. Opportunities to assist higher level employees, sit in on more legit work, etc. were slim to none.

    Advice to Management

You hire smart capable interns. Treat them like such, wasted resource there. Exit interviews with interns might be a good thing both for recruiting good talent and learning how to better utilize interns.

    Pros

Love the cafeteria, interesting people, interesting projects, fun atmosphere

    Cons

Was told I could get hands-on experience in the internship I never received, really bad desk set-up for an intern, never worked with or spoke to the person who was supposed to be my supervisor.

    Advice to Management

Allow interns more opportunity to move from department to department.

    Pros

When there are things for the interns to do, it's great. You'll get to sit in on tapings and help coordinate shoots.

    Cons

We worked during a very slow season. Our supervisors had nothing to do, we in turn had nothing to do.

    Advice to Management

perhaps, the office atmosphere could be a bit more intern friendly.

    Pros

    - Looks great on a resume
    - Get to work for well known networks
    - People are friendly for the most part

    Cons

MTV takes advantage of all the free labor they can get. It is super easy to get an intern position at MTVN, but once you graduate, forget about getting hired there. The useless "internship seminars" are just in place to make it seem like they are interested in watching you grow into a prospective MTV employee. It's all phony. Don't waste your time. Seek a better internship elsewhere where you actually have a chance of getting hired after graduation. I honestly think they post fake positions on the career site just to keep the HR recruiters busy. Ridiculous.
