I have been working at Vidant Health full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

VMC is an academic, level III trauma center that is also the only community hospital. Therefore, we see all comers, creating a unique learning and practicing environment.

    Cons

All the aspects of complexity that make the hospital a unique learning environment also can make it a bureauocratic jungle. Change and progress seem painfully slow.

    Advice to Management

Flatten the organizational structure to allow progress to proceed. Rethink basic structure. This is how we have always done it is never the correct answer to any question.

I have been working at Vidant Health full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

M-F and love my patients and teaching them.

    Cons

Vidant changed the benefits recently and cut out holidays. We haven't had a raise in several years.

    Advice to Management

Think more about patients care instead of numbers and focus on the quality of care. Focus on patients and employees satisfication and they would not have such a high turn over rate with employees and better patients outcomes and less complaints from patients and employees.

I have been working at Vidant Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

My manager and management staff was amazing, they really care about the staff and look out for your best interests if you ever need them. The staff is very helpful and informative. The new grad program is great for new nurses. Most of the staff will help you when you need it and not be nasty to you like some facilities.

    Cons

The corporate portion of the hospital could be improved on. They seem not to care about their employees at times. The discontinued their pension program. The parking lots are always full and at night when there is no buses to the far parking lot the walk is quite long! Dealing with the resident providers can be very frustrating, with them learning how to do their jobs and not wanting to be receptive to the full time staff at times.

    Advice to Management

Upper level management needs to be more involved with the staff and be sure that the changes they implement are actually beneficial (but I realize that this happens everywhere). My midlevel managers were amazing and I have nothing negative to say about them.

I have been working at Vidant Health full-time

    Pros

Active days in which you genuinely help others. Sense of family amongst coworkers in all departments.

    Cons

Can be busy/hectic if understaffed. Pay could be slightly improved. Great benefits.

    Advice to Management

Pay based on performance as a way to motivate people to turn away from inefficiency.

I worked at Vidant Health full-time

    Pros

Experience gained from level 1 trauma center
    Will pay for ACLS

    Cons

    Benefits are very expensive
Understaffed always, especially on night shift
    Hard to get vacation time
Management is pushing hard for all their RTs to obtain Bachelor's Degrees, yet they will not compensate you for having it

    Advice to Management

Hire more qualified RTs and stop understaffing-1 RT to an entire ICU unit is entirely too much for 1 RT to handle, especially for new grads

I have been working at Vidant Health full-time

    Pros

Available education and experience opportunities are big draws.
Salary is ok. Like any job it is what you make of it that counts.

    Cons

Sick leave policy. Stress - some units are worse than others. Patient/RN ratio's can be as high as 6:1. Management can affect the stress levels. Not all units are as stressful as others. Cafeteria is ok, night shift food selections are not very good.
