I have been working at Video Gaming Technologies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Decent pay for devs.
    - After 6 years, you are guaranteed 25 days of PTO (on top of holidays).
    - Challenging work that is interesting.
    - Diverse tech stacks in use; web/server tech stack, microcontroller work, protocols, GDK development, analytics, etc. There is a lot of interesting work to do here. If you are bored with web apps, this is a good change of pace.
    - Agile Environment.
    - Open office and laid back culture.
    - Free lunch.
    - Part of a global company that makes slot machine games.
    - Management supports career growth and will send devs to conferences.

    Cons

    - The release grind is very real.
    - Burn out is very real.
    - The legacy C/C++ code is very real.
    - Work life balance hasn't been as good as it used to be, but still isn't as bad as a lot of game companies.
    - Middle managers are pretty meh.

I worked at Video Gaming Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Software Engineers were provided with a lot of learning opportunities with paid benefits like Pluralsight, MSDN, conferences, etc. The company and management also encouraged tech environment by arranging exhibition for engineering teams to present their works.

    Cons

The pace were slow with a lot of communications to many teams. There are some old code that are harder to maintain. Software tools and environments were old (e.g., VS 2008, perforce).

    Pros

You can really see a change from when the company was private single owned to now being apart of Aristocrat. They really push culture in the offices and want to promote recognition. Decent benefits, good social events, challenging work opportunities for individual growth.

    Cons

Higher leaders listen to feedback on change but are slow to react but thats most companies. Its difficult to understand the matrix setup but you can learn it it just takes time.

    Advice to Management

Quit surveying your employees every day and actually take action that is seen.

I worked at Video Gaming Technologies (More than a year)

    Pros

Great company overall. Very friendly staff. Very laid back atmosphere. Jeans every day. Flex schedules. Free lunches every day. Gym, ping pong tables, basketball goal, and sand volleyball. Opportunities to give back to the community. Fun events during the holidays.

    Cons

Very little PTO. No onboarding or training. Terrible management. Lack of communication. Managers like to claim the success for all the hard work the employees put in, but they refuse to take accountability for anything when things don't go exactly the way they want. There is a lot of finger pointing. Changes to plans are made without notification to applicable parties and stakeholders. HR is horrible!! There is no one you can talk to when you have an issue that needs to be addressed. Policies and procedures only apply to some. If you aren't part of the "click", you will be targeted.

    Advice to Management

Learn to communicate better with your employees. Provide the tools, guidance and leadership that is needed to help your employees be successful. Show appreciation for your teams and the work they do. Stop pointing fingers at everyone else, and take accountability for your actions when you make changes midstream. Implement and follow the same policies and procedures for all employees.

    Pros

Great work/life balance. Owner who had an open door policy and really listened........

    Cons

Middle Management sub-par. Too much drama!

    Advice to Management

Hire "real" managers with a proven track record that are able to keep employees accountable.

    Pros

Things have changed for the better since the acquisition by Aristocrat. There is more accountability and direction. Leadership changes have also helped to improve things. There are many good people at VGT and the culture is improving daily.

    Cons

Aristocrat culture seems to be more "corporate" and some upper management decisions are seemingly made to make things look better without actually ensuring things will really improve.

    Advice to Management

Let VGT continue to be run as a separate company. Instead of implementing changes just because it's the way Aristocrat does things, take time to learn about how VGT does things because it could be the better way.

Free lunch, family oriented, try to do right for employees, low stress.

    Cons

Leadership is not great and limits company. Communication is not their strong suit.

    Advice to Management

Recognize those that are truely great leader in lower ranks and promote accordingly instead of keeping them down.
