    Pros

The professionals at Viking are some of the most talented, hard-working, and collaborative in the industry. Technical knowledge and ideas regarding implementation are frequently discussed and shared within and between teams. The resulting solutions are thoughtful and generate effective and efficient processes. It is gratifying to be part of this effort, growing and learning as a group. The pursuit of excellence... is a core value and creates a truly dynamic work environment.

I worked at Viking Global Investors full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good benefits, nice events, fully stocked kitchen, lunch provided, they really take care of you.

    Cons

The tech team was a very miserable place to be. The stereotypical abusive and cut throat finance work culture is not only tolerated, it's glorified, and unprofessional behavior by middle management does not appear to be seen as a problem even if it causes many employees to leave. Since the tech team is small and there is no flexibility in switching sub teams, these issues cause a greater negative influence over the... broad work environment and will pervade the day to day development. The on-call system is poorly run; every issue, no matter how small, is escalated to the highest level. Mistakes are punished and remembered forever rather than learned from and there is definitely a preference over working showily harder, not smarter. Contractors are also awkwardly excluded from meetings and events, often it feels unnecessarily so. Overall, a proudly non-inclusive work environment indifferent to change.

    Advice to Management

Be more strict on not tolerating poor behavior by middle management. Move away from blame culture to be one that is more team oriented. This isn't survivor, there doesn't always have to be someone voted off the island.

Great salary and benefits, nice offices, fully stocked kitchen.

    Cons

Constant turnover. Very little advancement opportunity, especially from lower level roles. HR is not helpful if you have any legitimate questions or concerns regarding your career path. Work life balance is nonexistent at any level.

I worked at Viking Global Investors full-time for more than a year

    Pros

One of the top equity shops, great compensation, awesome perks all around (401K, PTO, medical/dental insurance), interesting non-profit projects and community contributions, fun company events (e.g. Tour De Greenwich). Very cool founder (Andreas) and solid management and advisory team. Lots of interesting projects and opportunities to learn.

    Cons

From technology/development perspective: somewhat long hours (typical day is 10-11 hrs on average), tied to your desk because of market support/end of day (both on front and back-office). Work/Life balance was a little challenging. Technology middle management is not strong and can make your life quite miserable (micromanagement, passive aggressive attitude, etc). Lots of demanding projects with somewhat... aggressive deadlines. Lots of turnaround in IT (as of 2016/2017)

    Advice to Management

Some folks in technology middle management are not fit to lead (great developers but awful managers). Please work with them and make sure they actually inspire their staff rather than micromanage. FYI - I did not quit my job but rather quit my manager who was pretty bad; otherwise, I enjoyed my time at the fund.
