I worked at Virginia Beach CIty Public Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some “free” school holidays off (Charger vacation for some, which is ridiculous) and federal holidays off.

    Cons

When promoted from within, you only start at the bottom or minimum or the next scale, which is ridiculous. So someone who has shown progressive responsibility, loyalty to the administration and students, as well as knowledge of the organization and its business operations gets screwed. Saw MANY outside hires come in with little or no practical experience and immediately make $15-$20k HIRE because they had “bookkeeping” experience that boiled down to job experience using Quickbooks or some other “software” who were no qualified to do the actual job.

    Advice to Management

Reward loyalty of dependable employees by incentive based raises and when promoted, reward their years of experience with VBCPS.

I worked at Virginia Beach CIty Public Schools part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Loved working with the students. Special Education teachers were amazing with fantastic skills. Great special education team environment.

    Cons

Occupational Therapy salary is the lowest in the Hampton Roads area (this includes, Suffolk, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Hampton). No continuing education funding is provided to occupational therapy staff. State licensure requires bi-annual continuing education and licensure is required to work as an OT. Continuing education funding was withdrawn 4 years ago.

    Advice to Management

You have amazing, dedicated staff that will do anything for the students. The lack of professional respect from the school administration is frustrating and disappointing. Occupational therapy staff has tried for the last 12+ years to do something about the salary and the lack of continuing education funding (zero allocated), though this has been unsuccessful.
