I have been working at Virginia College full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The students, the outcomes, the work schedule, and benefits.

    Cons

Reentry specialist - they harass students. If thevstudentvwanted to re-enroll, they would have called. Leave them alone! Often they are harassed into re-enrolling, and can’t stay enrolled- due to no transportation, no childcare, face jail time for prior offenses, have no job to pay bills while they are in school (these are a few of the reasons I’ve seen students drop).

Go back to admissions tests- and study them- when someone is barely literate, they will struggle... they will struggle reading the material, and grasping the new material, and the applying it to the lab/practical/clinical/work study work...

    Advice to Management

Please pay attention to UNFAIR pay. It is so unfair. Starting employees making 1,000 less than employees who have been there 10 years?! How is that fair?!!!!!!! It’s not. Hard to be motivated, when you know someone who has less credentials and experience that you walks out with 1,000 less than you make... its infuriating.

Pay attention to campus incidents- being yelled at by students, even cursed at entire depts threatened, and the management wants to “give them another chance” really?!! What about setting a standard. That’s the problem, these students lives do not change when they walk in for professional job training, it’s just the same as they were in the streets. So they act the same. Set a standard. Raise up on the type of student you enroll. School is NOT for everyone. Our students need more help than we are qualified to give most times.
And it’s so hard to read off rules/syllabus first day of class when the students get what they want anyway. They have been conditioned to whine, get what they want, when they run to upper management. And so their crappy behavior continues. Which in a real world setting is not going to be tolerable.

I have been working at Virginia College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay for the management team is fair.

    Cons

You will be micro-managed to death. There is an extreme emphasis on getting students into the classroom and start the funding process as soon as possible. There is little emphasis on academics. Some students admitted to the school can barely read or write.

    Pros

Student Success is the best thing about the job! Salary and Benefits are really good in this position. Staff works very hard.

    Cons

Corporate Metrics are tough and micromanaging is a pain. Have to focus on student outcomes to make it tolerable. Performance reviews for department managers needed.

I worked at Virginia College full-time

    Pros

    The pay is pretty good
You become close with your students
Work-life balance is good; don't have to take your work home with you

    Cons

Management only cares about numbers and not the students
Can be very high strung depending on the department you are located
They were obsessed with the amount of students that did not show up to class
Students' transcripts/credits do not transfer anywhere else

    Advice to Management

Think about your students and the options that are available to them
    Consider promoting from within

I have been working at Virginia College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You have the opportunity to change lives of our students. Curriculum is awesome. The pay is good. There are knowledgeable management. State of the art equipment. Lots of events and activities for our students. The program is short and attainable. The company does a lot for the students. Professional products used. Education is an investment.

    Cons

Like any place of employment there will always be something that you don't like about the company. Make the best out of every situation. The company is only as good as those who are allowed to be in leadership.

    Advice to Management

Continue to upgrade, and offer free workshops. Listen to management concerns about what can be done to offer students a safe and a greater learning experiences. Offer more job opportunities within. Seniority is great but performances is better. If you want to have a great business make sure that you have those in place that don't mind putting in the work.

I have been working at Virginia College full-time

    Pros

Great Management and some really great people work here!
Not micro-managed you get to work how you want (within the rules)

    Cons

You make roughly 100 calls in a day and 90% of these people requested info online while looking for work and have no interest in school that is if they even answer. I have made 150 calls in one day and not a single person answered and these are manual dials btw.

The leads they give you aren't enough to make your numbers

It's not legal for Virginia College to pay commission so it's just your base. It's not a terrible base, but still for the amount of effort required to make your numbers here you could easily make more money in an Account Manager job.

    Advice to Management

Realize we are more than just numbers.

  10. "Great School to Work For!"

    StarStarStarStarStar

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

The school has clear and identifiable leadership. The leadership is very hands off and let's the instructors manage their classes the way the instructors want to. School has a good reputation and has had students be able to go on to major graduate programs at other schools.

    Cons

The school is closing the program that I am assigned. It's very sad that there will no longer be a Virginia College.

    Advice to Management

It has been a great run with this school! I hope everyone lands on their feet!
