    Pros

The pay is pretty good You become close with your students Work-life balance is good; don't have to take your work home with you

    Cons

Management only cares about numbers and not the students Can be very high strung depending on the department you are located They were obsessed with the amount of students that did not show up to class Students' transcripts/credits do not transfer anywhere else

It isn't about Academics at VC... it is about academic economics, emphasis on ECONOMICS

    Feb 8, 2013 - Academic Dean

    Business Outlook

    Pros

No pros, only cons. It used to have a lot of pros, however, there have been 3 re-organizations since February 2012. Stay away if you want job security or work/life balance.

    Cons

Impossible work load Everything is a state of emergency and a crisis, even if it isn't. Long hours. Long, long, long, long hours... and I don't mind working long hours sometimes. Disorganized Incredibly high turnover in program directors and academic management team No administrative help (didn't used to be this way, however, all administrative help is gone) Micromanagement from corporate level Rude and disrespectful behavior from corporate "help" team. Their idea of help is to send you a report of what you need to do, but there is no actual help get anything done. Convoluted processes with excessive approvals required, even making a flyer or ordering tape No academic freedom or real academic governance Desire for adjunct faculty only Program directors have to teach excessive numbers of classes No respect for employee time - will call you at home, on Sunday or email you 5 times if they want an answer, even if it is Sunday or late at night or you have called in sick or have a vacation day. If they schedule a meeting or conference call with 2 hours notice or 1 day notice, you are expected to attend even if you are not there. The Regional VP will literally call 15 people on campus looking for you if you are not on one of the MANY MANY MANY impromptu emergency conference calls. Audits are a farce - you will be cited for ridiculous things and that will be used as a performance metric (examples include poor snack choices for the auditors who would prefer you to supply them with Mountain Dew instead of some other drink) You are expected to maintain an average class size of 13 yet they will start a program with only 5 students enrolled. A just in time inventory philosophy which doesn't allow for a standing inventory of textbooks, scrubs, or student supplies. Students do not have needed supplies for days or weeks into the quarter.

    Worst job I've ever had

Jun 10, 2015 - Anonymous Employee in Macon, GA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

About the only thing I can think of is pay.

    Cons

This place is horrible. No care whatsoever for the students or the employees. We have serious issues that happen on campus that are ignored so we can keep that number. No growth. Your job is threatened everyday. There's a large amount of pressure to enroll students who aren't qualified just to make numbers. Management is the worst, really a bunch of bullies. There are so many things wrong with this place and not enough time to write everything. Yeah, work life balance is a whole different issue. Steer clear of this place. You will regret it. This job is only about pleasing the investors.

Good company that lost it's way

Sep 13, 2018 - Student Finance in Birmingham, AL
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Opportunity to assist others in making an education dream come true. - Decent pay for the position - Decent compensation package including PTO - Continuing education opportunities for employees - Can make this a meaningful career if you are able to survive the yearly layoffs. - Met and worked with many different individuals that have become lifelong friends.

    Cons

    - Lack of job security due to yearly layoffs, closing of multiple schools. - Once the current CEO took over, most of management became reactive instead of being proactive, although this seemed to change once the company was denied (twice) by the ACCET accrediting body. With ACICS re-accreditation looming, they have learned their lesson (I hope) and are going back to basics of being proactive when it comes to compliance. - Senior Management (Home office aka. Corporate) would roll out constant changes but not communicate to their peers at the top. The lack of communication led to many conflicting policies that created a lot of confusion at the campus level that ultimately affected the student and employees at the campus. - While most positions where well compensated, constant layoffs/eliminating crucial positions had many individuals picking up the pieces of other departments and doing the work of 2, 3, or 4 people. - Work Life Balance takes a major hit, especially if you are at the management level. - Hourly employees are pressured to complete 50-60 hour work responsibilities into 40 hours because OT is not approved. - Constant budget cuts due to declining enrollment.
