I worked at Virginia Department of Taxation full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The benefits and life balance with government work is great. You get all major holidays and a rather generous amount of PTO if you're a full-time employee. The health insurance is good. The work hours are good unless you want overtime, they are incredibly stingy with that. The trade-off to all of these pros is lower pay, though.

    Cons

The management is the worst I've ever seen. Supervisors and team leaders have no accountability, and make mistakes constantly. The environment they try to create is very fake. The lip service about us being "family" and the passive-aggressive behavior from management is insulting. Favoritism runs rampant, good luck getting any duties off the phones if your team leader or work force doesn't like you. If you're not on the good list of the different managers you have, you're essentially on your own. I went nearly three months without talking to my supervisor. On any day I could be reporting to a manager, team leader, supervisor, or work force person. It's confusing and demeaning.

Quality review process is unfair. I take hundreds of calls in a month but they can only seem to find one or two to actually review. If you're not on the good side of management, calls chosen for quality are cherry picked and nitpicked.

There is no real room for progression in the entire agency, and wages are stagnant. That appears to be government-wide though.

    Advice to Management

Simplify things when it comes to leadership. I don't need five or six different supervisors, I just need one that will help me if I have questions. Hire leaders that actually lead, and fire them when they don't. Be honest and fair with your employees. Don't say we're a family if you don't actually feel that way.

I worked at Virginia Department of Taxation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Easy to get a job
    Low requirements/expectations.
Good for part time or temporary job

    Cons

No promotions and don't expect a raise
Generally, the department likes to assign employees to "projects". These projects are duties for jobs that they either refuse to fill or can't fill. Because of this employees perform duties for jobs above their pay grade and are not compensated. After two years of performing the job you are given a % raise off your starting salary(Starting salary usually 30k or so). This is a trick because they pay you a % increase off this salary instead of opening the position and paying you say 40k. This trend continues as long as you keep picking up projects and waiting 2 years to be compensated for them.

    Advice to Management

    Hire better. Pay better.

    Pros

Flexible work schedule and Casual dress day on Friday's

    Cons

Low wages, lack of leadership, non professional work atmosphere

    Advice to Management

Senior Leadership, you need to MANAGE the Supervisors and Team Leaders. They should be held accountable for their actions. The best way to learn what is going on is to listen to the front line employees and then take the appropriate actions necessary to correct the situation. By not doing so, the message you are sending is you condone what is taking place.

I have been working at Virginia Department of Taxation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Work from home, fairly simple

    Cons

Not much room for advancement, control your every move, not as much freedom as private sector.

    Advice to Management

Focus and recognize people who actually do their jobs correctly and with passion. Focus less on numbers or adherence. After all, isn't the prime objective to help taxpayers with one call resolution. Concentration seems to have shifted to stats rather than quality. Looking elsewhere as are many others. Prefer not to have to stress over being micro managed and more on actually helping people. Sad that you're losing a lot of really good people who do their jobs well and care about people more than numbers.

I worked at Virginia Department of Taxation full-time

    Pros

Working for the Office of Technology you are:
    - Always learning new technology
    - Great team atmosphere
    - Option to work from home full time
    - Management encourages work/life balance
    - Longevity if that is what you seek
    - Great Health Insurance

    Cons

The pay sucks for employees who have been with the agency more than 10 years. They bring newer employees making more money but do not go back and bring the previous 10 plus year employees to industry standard.

    Advice to Management

Work more with HR to try and bring employees who have been with the agency more than 10 years to industry standards.
