I worked at Virginia Farm Bureau Family of Companies full-time

    Pros

This company is perfect if you want to work in an environment similar to Mad men. They don't really require you to do anything to make a real difference. Leadership is great if you like to not be challenged. It is really great using an abacus to do calculations. I thought is was a great company.

    Cons

Lack of minorities in any roles of importance. No Advancement on qualifications . Does not really represent small farmers. They only protect the interests of the big box farmer. In Monsantos pocket. They also fudge membership numbers by having agents buy them and attach them to fake addresses.

    Advice to Management

Fire all of the old leadership!

I have been working at Virginia Farm Bureau Family of Companies full-time

    Pros

Employees are given an excellent benefits package with company matched 401K. Emphasis is on healthy lifestyle so they also give a discount on health insurance premiums if you are active and focused on healthy living. Tuition reimbursement if you want to further your insurance education.

    Cons

Higher management cares more about the numbers than the employees well being and compensation for hard work is overlooked or underrated. The computer systems used are never working properly for the employees to get the work done correctly and consistently.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the employees who make the company great and notice how much better the work environment would be if compensation for hard work is put before profits for the company.

I have been working at Virginia Farm Bureau Family of Companies full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

I like working at Virginia Farm Bureau because it is a family oriented company. There is room for advancement and job enrichment opportunities.

    Cons

I can't really say there is a downside to working at Virginia Farm Bureau. There is a lot of longevity here which may be frowned upon in the workplace these days but I don't see that as a con personally.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management would be to always encourage your employees to strive to better themselves in their current roles so they can move forward.

I have been working at Virginia Farm Bureau Family of Companies full-time for less than a year

    Pros

I have worked enough to know that the culture of a company is what makes it good or bad. The culture here is good and getting better every day, mainly because the employees want it to be that way. If you just want to complain, or look for the bad stuff you will find it. If you want to fix it then this is the place to be. The salaries are competitive and reviewed frequently. Annual Bonus comes when the Company meets its targets, as it should be. Technology is here. New systems are being implemented and improved constantly and the changes are driven and prioritized by the Business Users. Work From Home is well supported and family/work balance is recognized and promoted. There is a proactive approach to continuous improvement. You can't ask for much more than that. Most Senior Management are open and approachable, not all, but you can't expect perfection, we are all human. If you are responsible and want a positive employer relationship then this is the place to be, if not and you expect to be rewarded without effort then this is not the place to be.

    Cons

There are no real cons. There are some little frustrating things and its easy to pick fault if you look hard enough, but the reality is they are not enough not to work here.

    Advice to Management

Continue to listen to all employees, make real changes and not for change sake.

    Pros

VFB provides you the capability to make what you want. If you are willing to work hard, you will be financially rewarded. There is plenty of opportunity for advancement at all positions. Farm Bureau was built to help care and protect the farming and agricultural industries while provided much more than just insurance; we provide local, one on one individual service that meets individual needs.

    Cons

    Technology is slowly developing.
