    Pros

Benefits are wonderful. Upper management cares about the employees and will work with you whenever they can.

    Cons

Some people can be gossipy and cut throat. It just depends on where you work.

    Advice to Management

You're doing a great job. Maybe listen more to lower level associates. They are the ones who really run the company and know how things work. They are in the best position to offer advice and make positive changes.

I have been working at Virginia Housing Development Authority full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Some needed changes through retirements and major role shifts; new blood in high-level management positions means new perspectives (reviews from a few years ago are largely invalidated). Excellent fringe benefits including gym, cafeteria, parking, etc. The mission is as strong as ever.

    Cons

Building renovation committee made some bad choices that most associates have to live with. Associate growth opportunities remain stunted. Company functions & staff are very siloed; people spend 20 years doing same job.

I have been working at Virginia Housing Development Authority full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The VHDA mission is as strong as ever. New people to the executive team are bringing non-government ideas. Overall, associates are very invested in the mission and work together to make the biggest impact possible. The wellness program is great. Free parking and the gym are excellent benefits.

    Cons

Decisions are occasionally made based on personal relationships, not qualifications. The culture is 'we have always been successful, so the way we do it is the right way regardless if there is a better way.'

    Advice to Management

Please listen to the new hires, both the ones on the executive team and at all levels. Keep hiring people with diverse experiences.

I worked at Virginia Housing Development Authority full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, invested Director, nice overall environment. Working in any department OTHER than IT is considered a good gig.

    Cons

The IT Department is horribly mismanaged and uses reorgs and firings to maintain order. The IT Director knows nothing of IT and surrounds herself with people who tell her what she wants to hear. For many years only women were allowed to do well in the IT Department, but I have heard that the situation is slowly changing, although everyone does their best to keep their heads down.

    Advice to Management

Accept new blood even if you disagree with them. There's a reason it took you 10 years to redesign a web site, and it isn't because you were right all the time. It's the same reason you were hacked for several weeks several years ago at a cost of several hundred thousand dollars; you refused to listen to the experts.

    Pros

They have great benefits and learning opportunities. The mission is great and the Executive Director tries to make you feel as an important contributor to the mission. Coworkers are great to work with and they are invested in the success of the company and its mission.

    Cons

Office politics and cronyism often places unqualified people into management positions. As such, management often leads through bullying, threats and intimidation. The culture is very divisive and is based on favoritism and exclusivity. Human resources needs to be overhauled.

    Advice to Management

You should listen to your staff and stop creating an Us vs. Them environment. Also, managers should be required to have managerial training every year.

I worked at Virginia Housing Development Authority (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Smaller, purpose-driven organization where employees can take lots of ownership of their work and contribute to different projects and new ideas. Great benefits and caring, close-knit employees. Laid-back working environment for the most part, with nice convenient office space close to downtown. Employees can receive educational assistance and training.

    Cons

Ineffective, untrained management with much more competent underlings. Low salaries. Lack of younger employees and career opportunities. Projects take forever. Stale and unmotivated workforce, much like a government agency. Gossipy environment with bar for professionalism set low. Upper management acts like royalty.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the mission. Stop running VHDA like a government agency. Develop the golden employees you have and let them shine - they have good ideas. Straighten out your HR policies and work on employee engagement. Recruit some innovators.
