I worked at Virginia International University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I really miss VIU. Diverse people, diverse ideas, and thoughtful leadership. Everyone loves one other, cares each other. If you are qualified for your work, you have a long road to go - good road! Just work hard so you can be promoted to any position. I just love how VIU cares its employees and its students.

    Cons

It might be challenging to compete with many diverse and hard workers. But we can always learn from each other. So I don't mind with that.

    Advice to Management

Hiring. So many hirings and some of them not qualified for the position. Hire a few people, so less management.

I worked at Virginia International University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The international student population and non-managerial staff are very friendly.

    Cons

Poor leadership, full-time salaried employees have to punch a time clock, significant micromanagement from executive leadership, university does not encourage research, university run like a business and not like a university, poorly accredited and not well respected in community, and is not American friendly.

    Advice to Management

    Close the university.

I have been working at Virginia International University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

VIU expanded rapidly in the past few years. Thanks to the hard work of many wonderful employees the university acquired new campus, added more academic programs, doubled enrollment. As a result, VIU offers plenty of job openings and career growth opportunities to staff and faculty as long as they fit in its dynamic culture. The benefits are great.
It's truly exciting to work in the diverse international environment and contribute to the growth of the university.

    Cons

The university struggles to manage the growth. The workload is hard to keep up with. Not everyone can fit in.

    Advice to Management

Provide training and clear strategic plan to staff, they will figure out what to do. Reward employees for their hard work (simple "Thank you" goes a long way).

I have been working at Virginia International University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

A lot of interesting people that you can learn a lot from since so many different cultures are represented here.
Management seems to care more about the employees than the bottom line.
PTO and holiday leave policies are generous.
There have been a lot of examples of upward mobility for many different positions.
Really helpful benefit of taking a free course each semester.

    Cons

Some of the policies are really outdated: punchclock system, mandatory 1 hour lunch break, no flex schedules. Hopefully these will change soon.
I'd also like to see the staff do some more social activities so the employees can get to know each other better.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at your policies and compare them to the cutting edge companies of today. You need to trust your employees more and, in turn, you will increase employee loyalty.

I have been working at Virginia International University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

it is very good place to work, peaceful environment, a lot of learning and challenging situations. We have many training and professional developments, and promotion opportunities.

    Cons

It is growing too fast, and there are some management problems. Hope that might be fixed soon. My personal experience and advice; try to study and learn more, be sure you are prepared to the right position.

    Advice to Management

Interview process should take more time, review the resumes and match person to position. Don't give people a chance to work without experience in the position. Or give more time for training.

I have been working at Virginia International University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nothing. This place is an absolute mess.

    Cons

Corrupt. Degree mill. Visa factory. Racist. Sexist. Worst of all, though, is you will be unable to truly teach. Students expect to do nothing and get an A. If they don't they harass teachers and report teachers to the president even though it is the students who cheat and plagiarize often. This is not a mere observation. Multiple sources have confirmed that students actually tell their friends back home to come to VIU because it is an easy way into the USA and that you are expected to do NOTHING and still get an A. Management will try to say differently but management is so far removed from the reality of daily life there that they have no idea. Do not even bother teaching here if you are female and not married to a Turk. Being female will mean you will be disrespected constantly by students who have no respect for women, especially women in authority. Not being married to a Turk means despite the harassment by students you will have no top management/administrative support or protection. BTW did I mention the management has SPIES walking around every day and everywhere to make sure you are working and/or not talking about the school? If you have the credentials, work elsewhere: Mason, NVCC, GWU, or Marymount. If you end up teaching here, don't say you weren't dearly warned.

    Advice to Management

.None. Management doesn't listen and HR doesn't have the ability or courage to tell management that what they do is illegal. Ultimatley this school will fall and when it does, management will have to answer for their abuses.
