I have been working at Virginia Tech full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Beautiful campus in a nice college town.

    Cons

It's all about "advancement" now -- bringing in money -- rather than education. Employee wages, treatment, and benefits vary widely depending on the college or center. Low wages for staff employees; "faculty" positions -- whether teaching, research, or administrative -- have MUCH better pay and benefits (twice the annual leave and 26 weeks of full pay for sick leave/year versus eight days for staff!), and administrative faculty often have less education and experience than staff employees. Benefits such as teleworking and flexible hours are available to employees in some colleges but not others. No opportunity for professional development (no money to join professional associations or attend conferences). VT doesn't follow written policies regarding use of performance reviews or warnings to terminate employees but simply eliminates and renames positions.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees (staff and wage) with respect. One staff appreciation day per year does not make up for low wages, lack of job security, poor employee relations and communication, and bad management.
Don't allow college HR departments to overrule university policies.
Establish an employee relations department that will help employees instead of always standing on the side of management.
Appreciate the experience and institutional knowledge of those who have worked at VT for a long time instead of forcing them out.

    Cons

Food service has long lines at peak hours
IT has its hiccups with wifi connectivity
    Retail is.... bland.
Sometimes you can't get the hours for certain times.

I have been working at Virginia Tech full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Whenever I can help a student out, it makes all the other hardships worth it. Great benefits, considering housing is free and you work where you live (no commute).

    Cons

Bad communication from upper management in HRL, questionable decisions made above you, very little advance notice on deadlines, too much emphasis on issues that don't seem pressing, lack solid policy training

    Advice to Management

Respect the RA's schedules. Don't expect them to be happy when they feel their academics are being forced into the back seat

I worked at Virginia Tech full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    World class university

Beautiful college town in the mountains of southwest VA

    Competitive benefit package

Numerous opportunities for professional development via skills workshops and campus courses

Close-knit community and friendly work environment (everyone loves the Hokies!)

    Great college sports scene

Low cost of living in the region

Overall an incredible place to work!

    Cons

Blacksburg is not a large town and consequently lacks many big city amenities. The nearby town of Christiansburg (15 min drive) and city of Roanoke (40 min drive) however can usually provide whatever service/attraction that Blacksburg lacks.

Staff salaries are underwhelming but this is slightly offset by the generous benefit package and the region's low cost of living.

Educational qualifications are important. If you do not have a masters you will eventually hit a ceiling regardless of how deserving you may be for a promotion and/or additional responsibilities.
