I worked at Virginia Transformer Corp. full-time

    Pros

There are some nice people who work here. None of them are managers.

    Cons

The president micromanages everything. The engineering managers are worse. There is no information sharing. Management style is autocratic and top down. There is no drive to innovate. There is only the profit motive.

Everyone is silo-ed. There is little if any collaboration. You never know how your work fits in with what others do. Managers do not take suggestions from those under them. I heard one manager say once that the engineers do what he tells them to do. Another said proudly that he was in charge because he "kick(s) ---."

I am convinced they deliberately make the place uncomfortable to work at to get a reputation so that it is harder to hire the technical and engineering staff. This makes it easy for them to justify bringing in foreign workers on H1B visas who are then paid less than an American citizen would be. All employees must sign a non-compete agreement which prevents them from working for any competitor within 2 years of termination from VTC for any reason.

    Advice to Management

No advise would help. They would not take it anyway. The only thing that will improve this company is if the president and the technical staff are replaced.

    Pros

Company has been around since 1971, so it has a reputation of longevity.

    Cons

Management is kind of screwball in that the atmosphere of the plant operations is considered "Controlled Chaos" from sales to engineering to manufacturing to delivery. I was told, rather vehemently, by someone training for management, that I would never change the system of doing things. This after I raised a complaint about how the order of things done in engineering were like putting the cart before the horse.

The company seems to have a revolving door of people getting hired and then quitting because they can't take how management runs the business, and their attitude toward their employees, especially women; the business is owned and run by Eastern Indians.

Also, their is no guarantee that you will be properly and completely trained to do your job. This was my situation.

    Advice to Management

Do everyone a favor and close the business, because you're angering everybody off.

    Advice to Management

Some people leave this company due to salary they get comparison to their colleagues in other similar companies, management even knows about it but they should take steps to curb this problem. Because it takes time and money to train new people.

    Pros

Welcome to VTC. I'm going to give you a problem that neither thepresident nor his entire management team could solve. And I'm probably going to give you lots of different opinions and imperfect data sources. And then I'll ask you to focus in on where the most value is and convince all those people with different opinions that you're right. But don't worry, I'm also going to give you a team of professionals. Those engineers, professionals and technicians are going to be tenacious in coming up with creative approaches. Those supervisors, managers and team leads are going to knock down barriers for you, connect you where you need to be connected, guide, support, direct and re-direct you. The HR, IT & other office staff is going to fix your computer after you spilled coffee on it for the third time, find you the unfindable data source, and smile after you ask for help.....very positive support team!! You are empowered and accountable but you are not alone. And the best part is you can't fail. Because after all, what all those people are reinforcing is that a VTC'nian never lets another VTC'nian fail.

    Cons

"Work-life balance can be bad in some cases"

"Working at VTC as an manager means you'll probably be working pretty long hours"

    Advice to Management

Continue doing what you are doing, continue re-examining how to create even better experiences and careers for your people, continue to experiment with different professional development and staffing models; don't slow down but understand that people's personal lives may not always support them to keep the fastest pace all the time----keep that into account!
