I have been working at Virginia Wesleyan College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Too many pros to mention here. VWU continues to grow and excel on all levels. We now offer online courses, making this a learning environment for everyone.

    Cons

I honestly cannot think of any cons to working at VWU. I’m thankful for what higher ed has to offer. Top notch all the way!

I worked at Virginia Wesleyan College full-time

    Pros

Good pay, good leadership in my department, good benefits package.

    Cons

Unrealistic expectations, male-dominated administration, preferred to sweep issues under the rug than address them head on.

I have been working at Virginia Wesleyan College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Health plan
    Free tuition
    Some good people

    Cons

Incompetent autocrat who will treat you worse than the worms inside the dirt.

    Advice to Management

Get someone into the department who actually knows what they're doing and knows how to treat people properly.

I have been working at Virginia Wesleyan College full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The college is experience a forward momentum not seen in decades.

    Cons

We are told repeatedly that there is no money for investment in academic departments... no new hires, no funding for growing programs. However, there seems to be plenty of money for new administrators and for administrative promotions. Needless to say, this leaves a sour taste in the mouths of faculty, many of whom have heard the "next year, next year" mantra for far too long.

    Advice to Management

Put your money where your mouth is. Stop expecting faculty to give and give and give, when there is no return on the investment of hard work.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Virginia Wesleyan College (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Small operation, great ability to have an immediate influence on outcomes for students without wading through lots of red tape. Good benefits.

    Cons

Constantly under resourced. Poor training. Tendency to grind certain positions into dust and then replace staff. Small operation so advancement opportunities are limited until someone higher on org chart leaves.

    Advice to Management

Practice empathy. Reward loyalty. Better communication about what's coming next is absolutely necessary. Don't be afraid to develop your staff to become better professionals, even if this means they are better qualified for a job elsewhere.
