    Pros

Smart people. Reasonable work/life balance for a startup. Catered lunch a couple times a week. Lots of happy hours and social events.

    Cons

Senior management either inexperienced or inept. CEO successfully ran a much bigger company but is out of touch with this one. CEO spent a lot of time on the road, often traveling for personal pleasure, or as part of his other job, Chairman of the Board of another company, located in the Pacific Northwest. Sales missed 9 consecutive quarters before the situation was addressed. Engineering opened a London office that was neither successful or necessary. But the worst of all was that the CEO let this place run out of cash, and did so with zero notice or transparency. Business as usual one day, the next day the CEO convened a meeting where he cried, said the company was out of $$, laid off 1/2 the staff, and said that the company might go out of business. Best (worst) part: CEO didn't have the common decency to walk down the hall to the where the workers were assembled to tell them the news face-to-face. Instead, the news was delivered via a script that he read from his corner office via phone. No severance for laid off workers. Since then the entire Board (except) CEO quit and now up to 2/3 of employees have been laid off or quit. The CEO is trying to shop the company, which has now become his personal playground.

    I worked at Virtana full-time

    Pros

Good people doing the real work in sales / customer support, development, and operations. Good technology solutions for enterprise customers.

    Cons

Completely incompetent senior management: secretive, misleading, directionless. No basic business sense. Ivory Tower Idiots. Can't relate to the "lowly" troops on the ground...too busy flying private jets to Canada to hunt ducks. (Don't be a duck).

    Advice to Management

Step 1 -- Recognize the problem: you. Step 2 -- Do everyone a favor: resign.

    Pros

Solid relationships with Hitachi and EMC that helped open doors.

    Cons

Fibre channel based, stuck in the past. Isolated and insular Senior Management.

    Advice to Management

Time for Plan C. Obviously Plan A and Plan B didn't work.

I worked at Virtana full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Decent pay, as others say, a good work/life balance. Free food and gym membership. Unlimited vacation policy, for what that was worth. Rank and file employees are nice and work well together. Decent company schwag.

    Cons

Disengaged CEO who trusted his senior management to make the right product and financial decisions for the company. Senior management was focused on empire building and undermining their peers. Hiring frenzy including launching a remote development site in the UK as an excuse to travel on the company dime. Focused on process buzzwords (Agile, DevOps) rather than evolving the product to address a broader segment of the monitoring market by introducing lower-cost features in an entry point product. Marketing unable to articulate in straight forward language what the products value is to potential customers. The product is too expensive for the value it provided to the customers.

    Advice to Management

Stop managing up (polishing the apple) and start holding people accountable at all levels. Failures are rarely due to the rank and file and any corrective accountability needs to be felt throughout the stack. Start working for the company - not yourselves.

    Pros

Interesting product. Solves a unique customer problem. Pretty good story developed by marketing.

    Cons

Inward looking senior management team. Seems out of touch with the industry and market trends. Sales management is definitely an "old boy network". Long term reps are highly favored and it is hard for a new comer to get support or make money.

    Advice to Management

Company needs a COO with turn around experience.

    Pros

Mildly plausible technology, can serve a specific set of SAN related issues Must be ripe for a takeover by one of the storage cartel by now.

    Cons

Poor senior management, very closed mind set worse the further away you get from San Jose. Bullying by certain members of senior management, very much the case when NIH. Confused strategy, not receptive to differing insights, knowledge or experience. Highly toxic environment owing to the above.

    Advice to Management

Listen to members of staff outside the circle of power. Show consideration and respect to your greatest assets i.e. the employees.
