    Pros

Make your own schedule. Pick your schools. Helpful District Office staff.

    Cons

Some of the schools (Divisadero and Redwood come to mind immediately) have very disorganized/misinformed office staff that deal with the subs. I absolutely refuse to do Divis. because of the staff.

    Advice to Management

Fix whatever it is that makes the sub system sometimes not inform us when a position is multiple locations. I have arrived for jobs before and been completely surprised that not only does the job require travel, but that I am also covering an elementary school (which I don't do). Lucky is the day this happens that I drove carpool, otherwise I would be without a vehicle. I won't take certain jobs now (like anything music) out of concern that it will magically become a traveling position once I arrive.

I worked at Visalia USD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working with the students. Satisfying to help people's lives. Opportunities to work adjunct duties for pay if you want to.

    Cons

Teaching to statewide tests lessens your own creativity and ability to teach students beyond the set curriculum. Admin red tape.

    Advice to Management

If it takes time away from teaching students, minimize it.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Visalia USD (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great students to work with
Some great facilities (i.e. school grounds)
Pay (for a guest teacher) is relatively high in comparison to the surrounding areas

    Cons

    Very little administrative support
Guest teachers receive little to no training in classroom management
Guest teachers often must face classrooms that are ill prepared for a teacher being out
Lesson plans are non-standard and can be difficult to locate and follow

    Very friendly staff and students
An all around great experience as an entry level job

    Cons

Few students who are difficult to work with
Miss out on certain after school events

    Advice to Management

More advertising on the programs offered after school.

    Pros

Some of the children you are able to reach.

    Cons

Trying to get everything done that was being said a teacher should do. Impossible

    Advice to Management

/When substitues are needed, management should sub in the classrooms to save money and to gain knowledge on what is going on in the classroom.
