Mismanaged - lots of talk and little action

      Pros

Company lease program - although the cost has increased regularly over the past few years Salary - above average Good benefits

      Cons

Decision making is haphazard at best, at the mercy of Germany with no autonomy in the U.S. Promotions are based in the old boys’ club mentality. They either promote friends quickly, or take several months to fill the other jobs. No Work-Life balance - Region Managers call and email into the night and all weekend, as well as during your vacation. Management is reactionary and last-minute fire drills are common. Good performance is not recognized, which is de-motivating (see old boys’ club reference). If you are a VP’s drinking or cigar buddy, you’ll go far without talent. Unable to get Incentives and Sales Targets published on time, unlike every other manufacturer in the industry who does. No stability in leadership positions.

      Pros

Great work tasks and projects Really interesting technology Autonomy in choosing projects to work on Great coworkers Good development hardware Ability to attend industry events Work life balance is amazing with work from home on Fridays, good payed holidays and PTO (even as a contractor), and flexibility in work hours. There is little stress and rush to get things done quickly. You'll never be doing overtime.

      Cons

Wages are subpar Contractor health benefits are worse than public exchange options $0.25 401k matching on 1% is just pointless Belmont office is somewhat hard to get to especially without a car Little opportunity for internal advancement, raises, or being brought on as a full time employee. Very nearly every full-time employee was transferred over from European offices and nearly all new hires are contractors. Sadly never gotten to drive a VW owned car even around the parking lot despite having to release my full driving record. It's a shame because so many cool vehicles are being tested and used.

Overall a good company to work for

      Pros

VW has many policies to support work-life balance, for example the work-from-home and summer hour programs add great flexibility to my work arrangements. VW also made effort to promote ethics and compliance by empowering employees of all levels to speak up. The leadership and work environment is generally supportive.

      Cons

As with any large international company, transparency and information sharing can be a challenge. I feel that a large portion of my effort is spent fighting political battles rather than doing actual productive work. The company can really benefit from better transparency and collective effort, instead of each individual or team safeguarding her/their own interest and pulling in different directions.
