I have been working at Volusia County Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The kids. The co-workers. The profession in and of itself.

    Cons

The pay sucks. We know that.

    The standardized testing is unending.

The parochial nature of the employees -- "good ol' boy" cronyism.

Lack of resources. Supposed to use as little of the copy center as possible, yet access to technology is extremely limited.

    Advice to Management

Fire everybody in the district that continues to micromanage.

    Opt out of common core.

I worked at Volusia County Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice facilities; dining facilities and food choices very good! Great extra-curricular activities.

    Cons

Absolutely a system caught in a time-warp! Until "they" man-up and take the cell phones from the students, "they" will continue to get low, lowsy scores and results. Students are not motivated; neither are teachers. Administration is a joke! Some have never been teachers; and, others are far too aggressive to prove????? Very, very sad situation. Pretty sad is that teachers have to purchase own paper.

    Advice to Management

Take cell phones from students! The inmates are running the asylum! There is no reason the scores shouldn't/couldn't be better! Get rid of Administrators who have never taught!

I worked at Volusia County Schools part-time

    Pros

Ormond Beach Middle School is a great school to work in. The administration is supportive and the atmosphere is positive.

    Cons

Inner city kids that were brought in were difficult to manage. School system is not willing to pay teachers on par with other systems in the area. There's lots of fighting over pay and benefits with the school board. There is lots of paperwork for teachers to do that have nothing to do with teaching.

I have been working at Volusia County Schools full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Caring and involved community. Dedicated teachers and generally respectful students. Strong traditions and student success stories. Opportunity for professional growth.

    Cons

School board lacks progressive vision. The distrust and some schools in particular are very parochial ... Some teachers and administration went to that school and then have worked there for 30 years.

    Advice to Management

Take more risks trust and treat teachers as professionals that the are. Have more backbone and don't give into parents when they are wrong. Stop changing your "mantra" every few years, have more consistency in your operating philosophy

    Pros

The awesome, dedicated adults who care about people and making a difference in the life of a child, time off to recuperate.

    Cons

Poor pay, lack of respect, top-down state and county mandated policies, curriculum, and accountability that make your job frustrating, impossible to do, and no fun! Developmentally inappropriate expectations for students which is teaching students to hate school and learning.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your teachers and role model the treatment you expect teachers have for students! Trust them as professionals to know what is best for students.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

There is nothing positive about working there

    Cons

The main culture in that place of work is talk as bad as you can about the person next to you, be hypocrite, care only about yourself, and get paid for the less effort possible.
From the first day you could see hoe awful are the working conditions there, how little the supervisors care about the employees and how different they treat their favorites. The fire people sometime in order to open positions for a friend, and if they can't fire you, they would make your life so miserable so you quit. They lie to you about stupid matters. Most of the old employees there steal stuff all the time, and they are always willing to rat their coworkers about stealing something that they wanted... In conclusion, is a bad place to work even for a short period

    Advice to Management

There is nothing to say. they are as crooked as they can, and knowing they are doing a bad job, they keep doing it since all they care is about their nice pay checks while the regular employees have to deal with the lowest salaries in the county, and paying close to $800.00 for a family medical plan...
