I worked at Volvo Construction Equipment full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly and open work environment with colleagues.
    Opportunities to get international experience.
    Culturally very diverse.

    Cons

Directors and up are very political.
Marketing and Sales divisions are weak and unable to grasp volumes.
    Pay is under industry standard.
Chambersburg is where most employees live, is dull too.
Shippensburg organization is running very thin after 3 layoffs. 50+hr work weeks.

    Advice to Management

Empower your engineers, keep your noses out. Engineering in this company know what they are doing and have a good business mindset, management keep your noses out and see your engineering turn the business around.

I worked at Volvo Construction Equipment full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Enjoyed my time there. Learned a much about vehicle manufacture and the construction machinery business. Onsite management was competent and accessible. Opportunities for advancement were good.

    Cons

Located in a very rural area. If you want to live near a population center, it's not the greatest. Offsite upper level management is in Europe.

    Advice to Management

Listen to local management and allow for local differences in making decisions about organization and work style.

I have been working at Volvo Construction Equipment (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Most importantly: I have a voice. My individual contribution means something and my feedback is valued. I know that I can respectfully challenge what I disagree with or don't believe in, no matter who is leading the charge. It's not because of who I am or the work that I do - it's because this is true for every single person here.

    - Senior leadership maintains an open-door
    - Training programmes are available for specific career paths
    - E-learning is available to everyone
    - Tuition reimbursement is available at the federal maximum pre-tax amount
    - Agreements with some local universities allow for tuition deferral
    - The workforce is very diverse with employees from across the globe
    - Company strategy and status is communicated regularly
    - The benefits and vacation package is one of the best in our area
    - Working hours are flexible for some departments
    - There are opportunities for employee involvement
    - The company invests both time and money in supporting the local community
    - There's never a dull moment. Ever.

    Cons

    - Upward potential can be limited without a willingness to relocate
    - Adherence to global processes can be difficult and is sometimes over-emphasized
    - The annual review process is viewed as more of an obligation than a tool for some managers
    - Some of the most interesting jobs require the most travel

    Advice to Management

Our customers aren't golfers and sailors. Our customers are technicians, equipment operators, owners of demolition empires - they're tough and they work and they get dirty. Let's get our brand dirty, too. We may be a premium product, but we live in a rugged market and our customers need to know that we belong there.

I have been working at Volvo Construction Equipment full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pleasant work environment. Decent pay plus benefits. Good internal training program. I feel like that VCE cares about its employees.

    Cons

    VCE:
Tons of waste in engineering department. Very low efficiency. Negative profit on some of the products. Not enough margin to support a healthy business. Keep loosing talents. People still working here are either stuck or haven't found a better job.
    Engineering department:
    1. Way too many managers not enough worker bees. Layers after layers of management, which provides little to no value but they sure adds a lot of waste.
    2. Incompetent managers. Way too many 'resource manager' who don't understand the technology their subordinates work on. Rely heavily on their engineers to tell them how to improve their work. When they finally use their own judgement to improve a process or fix a problem, its often impractical or offering little value . No motivation, no morale, no pushing for results.
    3. Incompetent people. Its not uncommon to see incompetent people with years of 'experience'. The ironic thing is a couple of those incompetent people actually got promoted to managers.
    4. Wrong design methodology--rush to finish the design first and then do cost reduction.
    5. Sometimes 'Volvo Way' gets in the way of efficiency and performance. Not holding people accountable for their performance. Tremendous 'respect' and tolerance for repeated slackers.
    6. Outsourcing doesn't work as expected. Outsourcing is very common nowadays. When practise right it can be and is supposed to be very beneficial.

    Advice to Management

    1. Downsize your management team
    2. Hire competent people and you need a lot of them once business picks back up.
    3. Hold people accountable for their performance. Sharp workers don't need pampering. they need direct and constructive feedback.
    4. Integrate passion and drive for performance in Volvo's culture.
    5. Invest in people's know-how.

    Pros

I was constantly challenged and really loved the people I worked with. It's a fast paced environment but every co-worker I came across took the time to explain what was happening so I would truly understand the process.

    Cons

The industry itself is not of the most stable right now. It's has been an amazing internship experience but there have been many recent cutbacks that worry me about the future stabilitiy of the company.

    Advice to Management

Continue to be transparent with the employees. The more you share with us about the state of the company the more secure and respected we feel.
