I worked at Volvo Information Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Volvo was a great company to work for. They believed in investing in their staff and providing opportunities for growth. The health benefits were great in North America. They had some great and supportive management and leaders.

    Cons

Volvo is constantly restructuring and still seemed unsure of how they wanted to structure the delivery. Also in order to secure additional savings, opportunities in North America are being reduced as they are sent overseas to BPIC. Once the restructuring becomes more stable, I believe it will again be the great company that I enjoyed for many years.

I have been working at Volvo Information Technology full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefit package, lots of time off, low cost of health insurance. Pension and 401K. Salary is slightly below market, but benefits make up for that.

    Cons

Resource constraints limit ability to get projects done efficiently.

    Advice to Management

Give us the tools and people to get the job done.

I have been working at Volvo Information Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Swedish company, and Swedes are great people. Opportunities to work with great colleagues globally - Sweden, France, Belgium, Poland, India, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and other coutries on a regular basis.

    Very good work life balance.
    Excellent benefits.

Dedicated employees who care about the customers (internal business units and external businesses) and each other.

    Cons

Not a good vision from senior management. Removed from customers, the strategy is not truly geared to the business requirements.
     Lack of coherent enterprise architecture
Lack of accountability in most areas.
Seem to keep same players in key positions even when they do not accomplish the desired results. Senior management is weak, and cannot seem to enforce decisions (when they are made) .
Process oriented to a fault, tend to take industry standard best practice (eg, ITIL) and 'volvoize' it resulting in complicated processes that do not work.
Title of Subject Matter Expert is given in advance of the person knowing anything.
Hard to advance if you are not Swedish.

    Advice to Management

After several attempts to reorganize Volvo IT to become a service oriented IT provider, management has given up and decided to outsource to HCL. Issues that prevented organization from achieving the goal of becoming service oriented and efficient were never realized due to the inability of EMT to understand the underlying issues correctly.

As a result the value adding part of the organization is being outsourced while the value draining part is being retained. Predict the cost of IT services will go up and the quality go down.

Core issue is the executive management team has been rearranged over the years, but remains the same players. Many people in key strategy and process roles do not understand the IT business today, and have set out poor strategies. It seems impossible to approach an initiative (ITSM, lean IT, cloud) in a rational way, leveraging existing industry experience. Instead the decision makers believe they know better and the result is nothing gets accomplished.

You can be proud of the fact that you are probably the first IT company to screw up Remedy implementation so bad it is unusable.

I worked at Volvo Information Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, work/life balance ok, multi-cultural/diverse.

    Cons

Evidently, diversity does not equate to equal opportunity! Some, if not most of he IT managers here are very biased and show it...they don't care about a certain group of employees. During my time with Volvo IT, I have continually witnessed that Afro-American and Latino employees, (as compared to the rate of "others") often, if not regularly passed over for opportunities for advancing/moving to other areas within Volvo IT, no matter how long they have been with the company, or have demonstrated they have the know-how and skills to do the job. Management has been doing this so long they don't have any concern or worry, and HR is no help!

    Advice to Management

Get over yourselves and your biases and prejudices, the workplace, (really no place) is no place for it.

I have been working at Volvo Information Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Volvo hires great people, the management shows a respect for knowing that good employees are the heart and blood of the company. Benefits and pay are very good compared to other employers. Excellent earned time off policy.

    Cons

Long term plans are almost non-existent. Direct managers change yearly but the message stays clear, nothing will improve. For all the talk of transparency its obvious if you stay longer then a few years there isn't any path for employees to grow without hopping around the business units or leaving the company.

    Advice to Management

Lots of time spent talking about building a culture of respect and transparency, but all decisions finally come down to saving immediate money without any plans on long term affects. Recent decisions to sell the IT Services group will make a huge impact to the business.
