I have been working at Von Maur full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pay is good, management wants you to succeed. Not micromanaged.

    Cons

Dress code is strict, hours are not flexible. Not allowed to have water (or any drink) at your desk.

    Advice to Management

Loosen the dress code. Females should be allowed to wear pants. Offer a flexible schedule.

I worked at Von Maur full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

You are able to meet and work with some great people and vendors. Depending on your position you are able to travel to New York and other major cities. They are closed on major Holidays and have great benefits.

    Cons

A lot of turn over and people that were promoted to divisional positions were not qualified. There is not a lot of flexibility at this company. You also wear a lot of different hats as a buyer and you don't have a lot of support so you work a lot of hours and it will be stressful. The dress code is horrible. Dresses, skirts and pantyhose only even when you are traveling and working at the office on the weekends.

    Advice to Management

Promote people that have bought in several different positions and have more than a couple years of buying experience so that they are more well rounded and can actually teach and mentor. Try to add perks such as bonuses. Add more support for the buyers so that they are not stressed out all the time.

I have been working at Von Maur full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The hours were great. 40ish hours a week and a set schedule.

    Cons

At the corporate office your culture was dependent upon your department. They are extremely strict. You can not have food or drinks at your desk or photos or anything personal. They treat you like a machine rather than a person. They are very stepford wives. It is so miserable going to work every day. The company is extremely sexist making women wear pantyhose and not allowing men to work in women's departments- but women...

Treat your employees like people. Trust them with water maybe? Stop being sexist.

I worked at Von Maur full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The other buyer assistants are awesome ladies and we are special breed that needs to be recognized by upper management of it was not for them that place would tank.

    Cons

Upper management needs to get a hold of their DM's treating people poorly. I have never worked in a place that you are treat like scum of the earth. Not allowed to ask for other assistants to help when you are not going to be there that is frowned upon its up to the DM if it's appropriate to ask for help. "Team work" is up to the DM's if it is appropriate or not.

    Advice to Management

CEO needs to be aware of how the employees are being treated and may want to look into the high turn over rate that they have. Maybe if you fix things around there you would have more long term employees instead of short term. It might be more cost effective for you to keep your employees then letting them walk out the door to hire and train new ones every other week.

I worked at Von Maur full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great place to start working if have you have no experience and want to get into corporate retail, able to move up in company quickly, manageable work load in the corporate office

    Cons

Very outdated values and rules, no flexibility for corporate employees such as leaving early, working from home, wearing pants in bad weather, do not like being questioned about processes or rules, unable to have food or drinks (including water) at your desk or any personal items in your office makes a very uncomfortable work environment, reports and all systems are outdated and very little desire to improve old systems,...

Reviewing employees and processes on a more in depth scale would improve overall culture. Also providing 360 reviews would give managers a better idea of opportunities.

I worked at Von Maur full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Adds some work experience to your resume. The people you work with are great (but they work in the same craphole as you). So this isn't a pro but I would caution: read other reviews about Von Maur before you think about accepting a job offer from them. There is always something else out there.

    Cons

Starting pay is crap. No career path. You do a ton of work but the company doesn't care or recognize you. No bonuses or awards for a job well done. Pantyhose and skirts/dresses even in the winter. SO MANY RULES AND POLICIES--and most of them are no where in your employee manual. You just find out along the way when you don't do something right. You punch a timeclock and if you are even a second late, you get a...

I have been working at Von Maur full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great experience for someone out of college who wants to be a buyer. 1-2 years as a buyer with Von Maur and you can go to any other buying office.

    Cons

Horribly outdated. Clients laughed at us because we had to adhere to the strict dress code of panty hose, close toed shoes, and dresses or skirts.

    Advice to Management

    Change.

I worked at Von Maur full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Beautiful stores, good fellow employees Great to start a buying career here Stable, conservative company. Well-funded. Growing, adding 1-2 new stores each year.

    Cons

Rules rules rules. There is no room for individuality, no room for trying something new and innovative. They are missing the human element and trying to make the business as computer, robot-driven as possible. There is a spooky "Stepford Wives" element to this company. There is a very high turnover rate, hence lots of young people in management. Agree with other reviewers--even at corporate. Not a lot of maturity--old...
