I worked at W.W. Grainger (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Professional company, known brands, working with large clients; getting to know their business and how it runs. Great trade show in Orlando for customers.

    Cons

Corporate reporting, scheduling and tracking your time. Depends on individual manager. Commission structure always changing, impossible to understand, classic "joy of a salesman YouTube video".

    Advice to Management

Let account managers run their own business ... without telling them how to do it.

I have been working at W.W. Grainger (More than a year)

    Pros

Very supportive company, great training and all necessary tools supplied to be successful. Hires top talent to maintain industry standard for customer service.

    Cons

Nominal starting salary. Commission is uncapped, but can be difficult to hit goals. Role is viewed as entry level, however workload is not that of entry level. Become a master of time management.

    Advice to Management

Focus on ways to make this job exciting. More team building meetings. Maintain good work life balance so you don't force great talent to quit and sell for competition.

I worked at W.W. Grainger full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

the profit sharing was great, the line staff are hardworking, many different locations to choose where you want to work, stable profitable company

    Cons

the buddy systems has made managers out of people who couldn't flip burgers for a living. They are not connected to their bread & butter--the customers. All they want to do is find their next "opportunity" so they can continue making over 100K + a year and do no real income generating work. The commissions and bonuses that Grainger pays out to its managers and sales team is unbalanced, since none of them have to put their hands on any product. This is what will keep Grainger behind the competition in the long run.

    Advice to Management

Restructure they pay scale for the sales dept and managers....make it about more than boot-licking and favoritism.

I have been working at W.W. Grainger full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The job security was great, we did not lay anyone off during the '07-'09 economy crisis. Profit sharing is amazing too.

    Cons

There is not a lot of places to move up unless you want to move to Chicago and work in the corporate offices.
