      Toxic Environment

      Pros

      - In general, WIT has good facilities on every office. - There are very talented people on every department of the company. - There are also a few good, heart-warming people scattered across the different offices. - The company seems to be aware that team-building activities are an important thing. - They pay above average in Portugal

      Cons

      - They expect, from day one, for you to work tirelessly and to put up with all kind of crazy deadlines. Just go take a look at a random job offer and find the line that says "Must have the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines". That is the same as "you will work the amount of hours we say that are needed for you to deliver". - Don't complain, or you will be leaving in no time, be sure of that. - Some people in management can't seem to understand that there are roles and they should be sticking with their own. Micro-management must really be a desirable skill, I guess...

      An incredible place to work

Oct 12, 2015 - Software Engineer in Coimbra, Coimbra

      Pros

I'm working at WIT Software for almost 4 years and both the company and my evolution throught these years has been amazing. I started working in the older HQ where there was so little space that we needed to take turns to eat at lunch, we needed to park our cars in the middle of a high traffic road because there was no space available to park the car on a safest place, there were no space to take a break without disturbing our colleagues, and so on. However, despite all of this problems, it was enjoyable to work in this company. The kind of startup spirit, the people, the challenges, my evolution as profissional, the ambition to become better, the CEO speeches always very ambitious too, were factors that overcome all the problems that I listed before, and my job was getting better day after day. In 2014 we moved to new HQ with great quality, it was a great difference from the older HQ with a lot of space and with great conditions to enjoy a working day, with a chill out zone and a big zone to have lunch. WIT offers some good perks, gives you and your family an health insurance and a SIM Card with free calls, free SMSs and free internet. There are plenty of team building activities, there is a WIT Championship were different teams of colleagues play different kind o sports (Futsal, Volleyball, Poker, Karts, etc etc) during different days through the all year, there are also some events on Fridays inside de company, in the last one we had free Waffles with Nutella. :D We created a cycling team, and WIT Sponsored our equipment, now we have the WIT Cycling team, opened to all WIT collaborators. Last year all company went to Sierra Nevada, it was awesome. Honestly I think that WIT is the best company to work in the center region of the Country, I seriously doubt that there’s another company with an average salary approximately of WIT’s in relation with the living cost of Coimbra. I think that is a matter of time to WIT become the top 5 of best companies to work in Portugal. I work in a very balanced team, with plenty of experience but with some young and willing to improve people. People that like challenges and like to have responsibility to work in a great project with some of the biggest companies in the world. I think that’s the best environment to have a good and stable evolution as a professional.

      Cons

Some projects are starting to improve its own team processes, but there is a lot of work to do to improve that aspect. Honestly I do not remember any major cons to share here.

A good company to develop your skills

Sep 15, 2015 - Software Engineer in Coimbra, Coimbra

      Business Outlook

      Pros

You get to work with some really skilled people If you get tired of what you do you can ask to change project/area Perks: annual bonuses, health insurance, SIM card with data plan and communications, team building events and snow trip Good working conditions (nice chair, good computer, full hd monitor) In-house training Depending on your manager, you may end up working very well with a good work/life balance

      Cons

They can put a lot of pressure on you Expect managers to come to you to solve a bug from a previous project you did a long time ago and do it in extra hours If you end in the wrong team you get work with bad people Some managers have company car and they sure don't deserve it Don't expect a comfortable keyboard and mouse, you get some of the cheapest on the market HQ has a pool table, PS3 and some more things to relax but if you want to use them you'll probably need to do overtime. I've been in the other offices in Porto and Leiria, seems that they don't have these kind of things to relax. In-house training is after hours Team building events are after hours our during the weekend Depending on your manager, you may end up working very badly with a terrible work/life balance You get bonuses depending on the KPIs your team achieves, but you don't know the KPIs. Lack of transparency.

Good place to learn, but that's about it

Mar 4, 2016 - Software Engineer in Porto, Oporto

      Pros

You get to work with very skilled people in different areas and you get to learn a lot from them. Flexible work scheduled is a big plus, as being able to work from home from time to time. The team building activities were great, from soccer to cooking all the way to the snow trip. Good office space with free coffee and fresh fruit.

      Cons

From the conversations I had with my colleagues your experience at WIT depends on what project you're in and who's your Project Manager. It can range from good place to learn and do cool things, to all the way painfull that you'd wish you'd never taken the job. Luckily for me, I got good projects and project managers, that's why it was a good experince where I could learn and do cool stuff. WIT is a very hierarchical company, as many in Portugal are. If the guy at the top says "No" for whatever reason, it's "No" all the way down. Transparency is as clear as bottle bottom glasses lens, although they're transparent it doesn't mean you can see anything. No matter how much you make a point or express the need for change, ultimately that decision will be made by one person, which isn't directly affected by those problems, so you better get used to those types of problems not getting solved. HR work at the whim of the management, so their power is very much limited, although they do work hard. Wouldn't want to be them. Raises are usually all around but the amount depends on a very non-cientifical equation, i.e., it's relative. Bonus are mythical creatures for some, reality for others, the only way you'll know is if your salary is higher than usual, but usually in those cases you'll get a phone call where someone gives you the good news. To bad no one will explain you why you didn't get one. Evaluations are written in stone, like the ten commandements, even if you agree with your PM some points are wrong, they won't be changed. Getting promoted is also relative, usually you have to be really persistent and spend a few years trying to do achieve that. For some reason you'll have to register tour work hours and if you do less than 40h a week you'll owe an explanation. No one will bother you if you do 60+ though.

Good to start your career but move on before things start to stale

      Jan 19, 2014 - Software Engineer

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Competetive salary (concerning Portugal salary ranges) Health and work insurance People are mostly friendly Management tries to promote team building events Company has a strong sense of social responsability

      Cons

Management is very resistant to new ideas and tecnologies, which sounds crazy when we're talking about an IT company. They often tell you that they welcome all new ideias and proposals, but I've tried to give new ideias and proposed some new software technologies and processes that would increase the overral quality and 90% were shot down because of fear of the unknown. I've already given up on this part. Sometimes (or all the time, depending on the team and client), the management will try to make you work after hours, mostly because of mistakes they've made. The deadlines are calculated in a ridiculous fashion and you'll have to pick up the slack or else you will be mistreated and probably sacked. And even if you pick up the slack dont expect a pat on the back. Dont expect bonuses, unless you're willing to sacrifice your personnal life. Work 24/7 and perhaps you'll be given a chance at a bonus. The current culture values more after work hours (which creates lousy software) than proper software made during work hours. The evaluation of the employes is based on a document that each manager follows on his own whim. Also, if you do a good work but still the project does not work as well as it should, then your evaluation will reflect that, despite being an individual assessment. Other people mistakes are your mistakes. Other people bugs are your bugs.

      Challenging myself everyday

Oct 14, 2015 - Quality Manager in Coimbra, Coimbra

      Pros

You get to work with some really nice people. Really good conditions and benefits: annual bonuses, health insurance, great communications plan, so many team building events. Very good office conditions. Challenges everyday with opportunities to grown and expand skills everyday. I've been improoving my skills in a daily basis.

      Cons

Dull and tedious definitely are not a feature. We have to work hard and that sometimes it's translated in working late but we make our own flexible schedule. But, really, we work hard and I'm not complaining.
