I worked at WMS Gaming full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people with whom I worked were very good people.

    Cons

Engineering disconnected from real project management lead to poor market penetration and missed essential features. Couple this with the idiotic notion that offshoring would become the panacea for the product ills...ignoring the failures offshoring wrought with their competitors and now the reason for their acquisition becomes clear.

    Advice to Management

Look outside of gaming for examples to guide you

I have been working at WMS Gaming full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

A profitable and progressing company, 50% of the culture of the company is very favorable to employees.

    Cons

Most of the middle and Associate managers are not professionally qualified, so there is all kinds of unnecessary decisions, and always violate employees rights and privileges. You will see more favoritism, on filling all positrions.

    Advice to Management

The company is merged with another one so there is no chance for advice.

I worked at WMS Gaming (More than a year)

    Pros

Some great people, opportunity to be creative

    Cons

Recent overly aggressive business decisions by corporate management (acquisitions) have left no money and lots of debt. Lots of recent layoffs and reductions, very little opportunity for raises or promotions.

    Advice to Management

Bite off what you can chew

    Pros

Compensation, flexible, good benefits, occasionally really fun games to work on.

    Cons

Poor leadership since merger, unknown direction, lots of layoffs, reactive management, too many managers not talking to each other and making poor decisions.

I worked at WMS Gaming full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fun environment to be in...if you're used to normal, boring IT/engineering work, being somewhere with art, music, games, etc., is a welcome change of pace. Company embraced its long history as Williams Corp., who made the pinball machines and video arcade games for generations of youth.

    Cons

Chicago location can be difficult to get to (no easy access from Metra or CTA trains). Company is going through two consecutive buyouts/mergers, and the corporate environment is changing DRAMATICALLY. NO clear picture as to upper management vision, and the old Brian Gamache ways of treating each individual like a valuable commodity are fading away, day by day. When I was laid off, my immediate boss did not know, and I went from my director saying "hey, can I talk to you for a minute?" to being escorted out in less than 10 minutes, with no opportunity to retrieve personal effects or say goodbye to people I'd spent years working with.

    Advice to Management

Remember who Williams/WMS used to be. Treat people like family, not like budget items.

I worked at WMS Gaming as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Didn't get treated like an intern; I was working as a contributing member of the team. Got some great refactoring experience and brushed up on my Linux toolset knowledge. Team members were very helpful, and there's a thriving wiki for code documentation and inter-team communication.

    Cons

Lots of inertia on the technology front, particularly with respect to version control. Long-term demographic trends don't really favor slot machine makers. Pending acquisition of Bally may or may not help, but that's something that will take a few years to really play out.

    Advice to Management

    Push newer technologies more aggressively.

I have been working at WMS Gaming as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

testing the DGM/EGM via G2S is awesome test engineering dutires. The QC test cases on hand are an exceptional QA tool and processes

    Cons

some personnel are to protective and are reluctant on providing you further detail knowledge for full integration of test coverages for the DGM/EGM

    Advice to Management

voice concerns for senior personnel to work with others no matter what level of IT knowledge they bring to the teams
