I have been working at WNYW

    Pros

Good place to get started in the news industry. Lots of people who are willing to help you and work with you on skills you want to learn. There's opportunity to advance (there are producers and assignment desk editors who started out as interns). Most people are patient and will respectfully correct you when you make a mistake. Even as an inten or trainee you have opportunities to pitch (and sometimes report) stories. They focus more on feature stories so people are very open to all types of story pitches. As a PA you get rotated around different positions a lot which helps you gain experience.

    Cons

They don't give many training days, it can be anywhere between 1-3 days so sometimes you don't feel fully prepared before having to start a different position. You have to learn a lot simply from making mistakes (some people are open to questions, some are not). It's kind of cliquey so it can be difficult to fit in depending on your personality. You have be very careful to communicate things to people through all outlets (email, phone calls, text) because you will get burned otherwise. There's not much quality control and when you have to work in a team it can be difficult if you happen to work with someone who doesn't care much about their work. There's sometimes too much compromise when it comes to working around building construction, to the point where it's sometimes difficult to work efficiently.

I have been working at WNYW full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Some of the people you work with are nice. Good benefits.

    Cons

There is no sense of employee appreciation. They are very cheap and expect you to go all out of your way for them but do nothing to earn it.
