I worked at WPX Energy full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great people, good salary and benefits, retirement plan, fair medical insurance (expensive but fair), parking garage, good upper management.

    Cons

Unstable due to low gas prices, cutback, layoffs, an industry problem. There are a few pockets of 'good ole boy' type management which allows favoritism and unfair practices, but in any large company this is going to occur. Overall, it is better than most.

    Advice to Management

Examine your departments and management teams with a critical eye, don't be so trusting. As far as the market conditions, that is a vast problem for upper management, and I wish them well in dealing with it.

I worked at WPX Energy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They have a colorful logo, make payroll every two weeks and have a respectable benefits package. Company provides all office supplies and access to decent computers and telephones.

    Cons

Too many inept middle managers (for example, engineering managers) that survive cut after cut presumably due their ties to VPs (it can't possibly be due to their skill as managers nor their basic understanding of the business).

    Advice to Management

Require middle management to have at least same skill set as their subordinates. Managers should be able to perform job of subordinates; however, there are many that couldn't if their life depended on it.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

    - Great co-workers, professional and hard working, wanting to do the right thing
    - Nice facilities
    - Maintains updated technology: computers, software, mobile phones, operational equipment
    - Managers and Directors respect abilities and capabilities of employees
    - Very open lines of communication, team approach, input valued
    - Wonderful benefits package
    - Truly believe in work - life balance even though we worked very long hours and had many responsibilities but directors did what they could to allow folks to take PTO as desired, sometimes had to shift desired dates but PTO was taken
    - Everyone strived to do the right thing and fulfill responsibilities
    - Totally focused on safety and environmental safeguards

    Cons

    - Downsized due to low energy prices and many people lost jobs - decisions made fiscal sense
    - No notice as to last day of work when RIF happened - understandable but disappointing
    - Energy industry is a roller coaster ride - success of the company is impacted how energy prices are doing but should be expected of any commodity

    Advice to Management

Maintain that great competitive benefits package :)

I worked at WPX Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Really enjoyed working for WPX because of the people. Some companies pay more, but WPX is competitive.

    Cons

Unfortunately sounds like WPX is falling into the slide of typical upstream oil and gas environment of hire on up cycle and fire on down cycle.

    Advice to Management

Treat your people well in good times and bad and you will build loyalty which allows WPX to pay less than others.

Oil/Gas Company. Rough times right now.

I worked at WPX Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and pay. Good work-life balance. Free parking, good location downtown. Welcoming culture.

    Cons

2-3 major layoffs per year since 2014. Some of the absolute best and brightest have been slashed out for no reason and with no transition period, leaving those left to scramble and recover. High stress environment. Managers favor cheap, inexperienced new employees and send older employees out to pasture. Major favoritism and nepotism evident. Too many executive changes too quickly and no promotion from within muddied the waters.

    Advice to Management

Pick a strategy and stick with it. Don't abuse your experienced employees. Stop with the quarterly layoffs. You're giving your employees heart attacks.

I worked at WPX Energy full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The work culture is very good, along with the employees. Benefits are good, with several health care options available. Time towards PTO is based on experience.

    Cons

It relies heavily on the commodity price. So with low prices in both natural gas and oil, this company is struggling and has laid off a good amount of its work force.

I worked at WPX Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and relaxed atmosphere. Good diversity program during good times (during the bad times the immigrants and disability people will be first to go though).

    Cons

Many of the managers are inexperienced and are afraid of experienced technical employees. That makes it a great place for early career and straight from college employees but chases away experienced middle and late career employees.

    Advice to Management

Try to get more seasoned managers who will attract quality employees.
