    I have been working at WXIA-TV / 11Alive (More than a year)

    Pros

They hire young and inexperienced employees so it's a great first step for many college graduates. TEGNA promotes from within so you're able to move to new cities to propel your career. The health benefits are decent, they encourage volunteer work and they offer money for education (but you have to pry to get any information on this program)

    Cons

This station is in a downward spiral with no sign of recovering. Upper management puts unrealistic expectations on employees. Overworks, under pays, and ultimately works people into the ground. They've offered early retirement packages to older employees but never replaced their positions creating a very low moral and culture of stressed employees who are now taking on multiple roles. They hire young employees fresh out of school but offer no training and pay the bare minimum. A lot of young employees are offered part time positions to avoid paying benefits and refuse to pay overtime which means resources are scarce. Upper management has a say in every aspect of each department but also has no clear plan to success. It's not unusual to watch plans fall through or completely change which makes it impossible to keep upper management happy since they don't stick to common goals. Not an ideal place to work! If you're a good employee they'll take advantage of you until they can't afford you and then let you go. They expect high quality work but refuse to invest in the tools necessary. No sense of community unless you consider the disgruntled employees talking about how miserable they all are. I see no positive future for this station. Even the building is falling apart and the overall vibe is dismal. If you take a job here do not intend on staying long term.

    Advice to Management

STICK TO A PLAN. TRUST YOUR PEOPLE. The flip flopping and micromanaging is killing this station. How can any company survive when a plan is implemented for 2 weeks then completely abandoned. I believe upper management doesn't recognize how poisonous their input is. You're killing creativity, you're dismantling existing projects and you're destroying any chance of growth. Management preaches the idea of innovation but does not accept failures or invest money in new ideas.

    I worked at WXIA-TV / 11Alive part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great and experienced journalists who know the news. During my time there I learned from many seasoned pros who were willing to help.

    Cons

When you have journalist who been in the business 20+ years, I would think one would value their input. At WXIA that was not the case. WXIA did a poor job utilizing the input of seasoned pros while trying to attract an younger audience with "social media" news.

Some managers are too inexperienced for their position. Other managers are complacent and some have hidden agendas.

    Advice to Management

    WXIA needs new management.

    Pros

Providing numerous media solutions with a variety of TV stations as well as a full suite of digital opportunities. Great potential of offering the best media/marketing solutions in 9th largest TV market.

    Cons

Not enough sales support. The A/Es are charged with preparing presentations, research, marketing, promotions, selling, inputting orders, posting accounts, make-goods, on boarding digital accounts, monitoring digital accounts, TV production, compiling reports for management, training and new business development. Two Assistants support more than 16 A/E's. A/E's are not able to devote enough time to selling, therefore at 100% commission potential for competitive income is limited.

    Advice to Management

When hiring new business AE's, consider a compensation package that allows the AE's to farm and hunt for the right types of business that will make more money for the company and the AE. Add support staff enabling the AE's to sell more. Create quality research materials to help the AE's sell from a qualitative standpoint instead of competing against cpp's. Begin the sales process at the client and planner level instead of at the buying level. Buyers facilitate a plan; be part of he plan. Create customized client solutions that allow advertisers to reach consumers at various touch-points i.e. digital, program integration, mobile, email marketing, etc. Build a team environment with AE's as opposed to competition environment. AE's should support each other and share ideas and materials.

    Cons

There during a time of change and company split. worked through it though as a team.

    Pros

Nice, good, honest people for the most part. Okay benefits. Part of a larger organization, Gannett, now Tegna, so multi market promotion opportunities should one seek career growth outside the Atlanta market are good.

    Cons

Poor management, at least on the advertising side. For example: one manager at 11Alive was completely unprepared for my arrival on staff, 2 weeks later, still unprepared (and on vacation!), working on borrowed equipment, business cards a month later, the list goes on. No training other than here, sit with this rep for a few hours and watch them, no weekly team meetings (other than the ENTIRE sales staff on Wed), heck no monthly team meetings! No one on one's, absent a lot of the time riding with other reps not on our team. Expectations not set appropriately nor managed until there is a problem. Another manager certainly had tenure and managed a specialty product marketed to a specific audience which I guess made them a good fit, however when I am in a client meeting and proper grammar or sentence structure isn't used, it is difficult not to cringe. Digital sales expected but the roles and rules are ill defined, plus tv reps must split their commissions with the digital side should digital be sold, so the tv reps avoid the digital reps like the plague even if they are there to help them. The teams are separated into silo's, with everyone stepping over each other in the new business development realm. Structure is nonexistent, rules/territories undefined. Poor systems as well, need major technology upgrades, ad order entry system is ancient, CRM isn't utilized well.

    Advice to Management

Please hire adept management staff, that are trained AND experienced leaders. "Leadership is the ability to not only understand and utilize your innate talents, but to also effectively leverage the natural strengths of your team to accomplish the mission." Some managers at 11Alive are very smart and talented people but their ability to lead effectively leaves A LOT to be desired.

    Pros

Good, honest. local management people. They seem to care about people. The product we sell is slightly above average.

    Cons

Salary is cut every year. There is heavy pressure from corporate to keep costs low. The news department tries to keep the news stories about good things, but that makes for a boring newscast with low ratings.

    Advice to Management

Stop cutting salaries. Get better software to operate with Nielsen ratings.

    Pros

You get to work with many creative, hard-working people. It is a great place to step up your game.

    Cons

Work-life balance, just as in every shop, is a struggle for everyone except management. If you want to excel and get enough downtime this may not be the place for you.
