I worked at WYSS Institute (Less than a year)

    Pros

Ground - breaking research being conducted. Many fields in biology and engineering being explored. Good pay for research interns. Great supervisors. Always professor/research talks and weekly social hours.

    Cons

Expect longer than normal hours, depending on your supervisor. Potentially may have to work on weekends, depending on state of research.

    Advice to Management

Continue to inspire faculty members to achieve great things. Inspire employees to create a better work-life balance.

I have been working at WYSS Institute full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The science done and technologies developed are amazing. Most people are smart and ambitious.

    Cons

Institute as a whole lacks direction. Each platform serves as a mini-fiefdom for the platform head, swinging to their whims. Almost no opportunity for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Bring in more people with experience in actual commercialization.

    Pros

Lots of different things you can work on and learn. You get to work on the bleeding edge of pretty much every technology.

    Cons

Very few people that understand how to take good ideas to market. Lots of people still stuck thinking they are just post-docs so it can be really difficult to get people to share their work, even internally.

    Advice to Management

Bring in more people to help target commercial applications to really translate the great ideas into the world changing products that they can be

I worked at WYSS Institute full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The work environment is fast-paced and ever evolving. A seemingly endless supply of innovative ideas and opportunities to explore. Well capitalized with exceptional resources available to researchers.

    Cons

The culture is very much a start-up in an academic environment, which is an interesting dichotomy. Harvard faculty, type-A personalities, and boundary pushing innovation create a work environment that is not for the faint of heart. Competition is high, but recognition can be fleeting.

    Advice to Management

The Boston and Cambridge Wyss locations are incredibly unaware of one another and collaborating opportunities are missed as a result of this disconnection. An independent non-Harvard evaluation of the Wyss mission and organization should be considered.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at WYSS Institute full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Extensive resources available to carry out research.
Recruits highly motivated and highly intelligent scientific talent.
    Openly promotes cross lab collaborations.

    Cons

In a transition period from a small startup institute to a much larger almost corporate structure. Still going through these growing pains especially on the administrative side.
Seems to have a mental block for promoting upward movement for scientists, especially graduate students and postdocs. This seems strange considering the advertised philosophy of creating an academic research environment that more closely mirrors biotech and industry.

    Advice to Management

The scientists, their ideas and research outcomes, are the reason that the Wyss institute thrives. Consider more deeply developing a business environment that fosters upward career trajectories, especially for graduating PhDs and postdocs. Why squander scientific talent that has been invested in for years by forcing out scientists due to requiring industrial experience for upper level positions? If more business centric experience is desired, then provide opportunities for training/continuing Ed.
