"Company makes money but doesn't pass it along to employees"

I have been working at Wabtec full-time

    Pros

Strong player in transit market Job security

    Cons

No Employee Stock Purchase plan (have to acquire stock through 401K) No bonus or profit sharing Favoritism is visible

    Advice to Management

Share the financial success of the company with the employees who got you there. Even a small incentive program aligned with divisions hitting their I&O would be nice

    Pros

Very nice new office. Professional and competent coworkers.

    Cons

There is only one layer of management present at this location. All other management is remote and clueless to the day to day operations here. Management is willing to cut corners to make schedule obligations at the customer’s expense. This is compounded by a complete lack of any adherence to a software development process and leads to a focus on fighting fires. Employees are disengaged, un-empowered and... generally feel unvalued. There is no training programs, limited opportunities for advancement, tasks are dictated, and there are no bonus or other incentive programs, all the while management micromanages everything due to their distrust of the employees. Overall, the employees are underpaid based on current market values and because management is negligent on providing timely performance reviews the employees are left with no other recourse than to seek employment elsewhere. The attrition rate is on the rise. Poor performers are not being held accountable and no one seems to have any authority to make changes.

I have been working at Wabtec

    Pros

Very successful and profitable company means that there is a lot of work to do, layoffs are rare, and the work is rarely boring. For stockholders, this company is exemplary. The rail transportation industry is fun to be a part of. However this is fundamentally a "blue collar" industry. Engineers who like working with heavy machinery will relish the opportunity to get their hands dirty and play with locomotives... and pneumatic systems, while engineers looking for a more pristine "white-collar" office or laboratory environment might be disappointed. 401k benefit (3% match plus additional 3% end-of-year bonus) is excellent. The working environment is generally casual. During the summer, a 9/80 workweek is available. For engineers, working hours are flexible. Most supervisors are knowledgeable and supportive. However there are a few bullies, and if you have the misfortune of being a direct-report of one of these, your perspective will naturally not be a positive one. Wabec is a mixed bag. In my particular situation, overall the positives outweigh the negatives.

    Cons

Salaries are initially competitive, but annual raises tend to be on the low side, which may unintentionally encourage the most experienced engineers, seeking to maximize their income, to look elsewhere. Despite extended periods of record long term sales and profitability, the company has never offered any performance-based bonus opportunities to any employee below Director-level. Yet, during economic downturns,... the company may choose to further reduce or even eliminate annual salary increases. Human Resources is not particularly outgoing, imaginative, or progressive as HR organizations in other contemporary companies. HR does not generally appear to work on behalf of the employees, as is generally expected. The elimination of a full time receptionist is another example of a "penny wise, pound foolish" decision. It results in a very uninviting and unprofessional first impression to all visitors, customers, vendors, and prospective employees. Very successful and profitable company means that the workload can be high, although each employee's experience will vary. Some may be able to manage an 8-to-5 routine, while others (in the SW group, for example) may regularly be called upon to work evenings and weekends with (as mentioned above) no bonus opportunities for a job well done. The company is more focused on satisfying stockholders than employees, and it is very successful at doing that. Use-it-or-lose-it leave accumulation policy is stingy, unfair, and inconsiderate of employees--basically cheating employees out of earned leave instead of offering a more fair and creative alternative such as vacation-buyback. The office area was designed for a much smaller work force. Year's of success have resulted in many new jobs. But the company has chosen not to expand the office space and instead has filled open areas with additional cubicles. The result is an undesirable cramped and congested working space.

    Advice to Management

Be more creative at developing and rewarding good employees. Be as focused at satisfying employees as you are satisfying stockholders.

I worked at Wabtec full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Wabtec offers good benefits. There are some great people working there. Building locomotives from the ground up is pretty interesting.

    Cons

Pay is below average. There is no bonus plan for most employees. Company is lagging in technology development and this is likely to present challenges going forward.Internal business systems need serious updating and this poses another challenge going forward.

    Advice to Management

Follow your own business processes and stop allowing senior leaders to short circuit them at there own discretion. Aggressively update processes that are clearly not working. Establish some accountability where it is clearly needed, but does not exist today.
