      Former Employee - Laboratory Technician

I worked at Wacker Chemie full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

      - Good benefits and salary for the position - Diversity of projects - German work structure - Safety oriented culture - Travel opportunities if you have the right skill set(s) - There was fairly frequent opportunity for OT if justified by management - Application of techniques that can easily be transferred to you

      Cons

      - Seasonality of the industry I was working - A bulk of the work is very repetitive (could be a pro depending on your view) which can lead to boredom especially if you are testing experimental material on machine(s) - Slow to implement changes sometimes - Occasional favoritism - Some colleagues can be difficult to work (depending on your personality)

I worked at Wacker Chemie full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

      High dollar responsibilities. Cool technologies.

      Cons

Polysilicon is a commodity good now. No profit in it. If you have drive or desire to succeed this is not your company unless you are German. Americans are thought of as lesser opinions and treated as such. Women are treated as secretaries, regardless of background. They will ask you to design and install things in an unsafe manor to meet production expectations and expect you to take responsibility. They have more alarms...

      Advice to Management

You have a long way to go. Stop trying to run a company in America like you do in Germany. Stop lying and saying you have plans for people’s development. Employees are people, not just resources.

I worked at Wacker Chemie full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

      - Great place to get on the job experience - Pay was getting increased when I was leaving. Entry pay was $21 and the new top out is $30.25 for Silanes/Poly operators after about 7 years. - The area around Charleston, TN is a great place to raise a family. There are many great schools and communities. - The plant is brand new and system components work like they should. New additions like HDK, etc. are coming down the...

      Cons

      - Shift work of course. 6-6 rotating shifts. - HR is oblivious to workers wants and needs. We asked for a pay raise for 3 years because we had many great operators leaving for better jobs. It took them a long time to finally listen. That is why I feel that the knowledge that the German mentors instilled in the operators at start-up is gone/dwindling. - Very volatile and dangerous chemicals. It takes an experienced and...

      Advice to Management

You’ve got some great operators still at Wacker that care about the company and making a living for their families. These guys are the key to making your safe and a great place to work. Listen to these guys because they know the plant, and don’t be oblivious to their requests. If not you’ll continue to be a revolving door for operators getting experience.

      Pros

Great Benefits, normal working hours, flexible schedules outside of production. Stable place to work if you have a family.

      Cons

Salaries on the low end of pay scale. Lack of development. Swing shift for production employees.

      Advice to Management

I have been working at Wacker Chemie full-time

      Pros

Good coworkers, generally friendly work environment Management seems to respect opinions from all levels within the hierarchy though they may be slow to make changes. Good opportunities for lateral movement or promotion within company due to high turnover rate and the return of German contract employees to Germany.

      Cons

As this is a startup plant, safety concerns are frequent and dispersion of safety information or lessons from previous safety incidents is not very effective at the moment. Low pay compared to national average, especially for the amount of work/hours required.

      Advice to Management

Increase pay to retain valuable workers across all levels of pay. Be more open with efforts to cultivate a safe work environment. Hiding incidents does not pay off in the long run.

      Pros

Good benefits package including tuition reimbursement.

      Cons

Poor HR Department. Upper management wears horse blinders and doesn't actively take employee input seriously. Pay is under market rates.

      Advice to Management

Realize that lower management and supervisors are knowledgeable and experienced. Please listen and act.
