Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

    Horrible Micro Management

    Jul 28, 2022 - City Coordinator

    Pros

Cool, modern office spaces and definitely has the tech start-up vibe.

    Cons

Horribly micro-managed, if you're looking to be treated with zero trust in the ability to perform your job - work here. Management is all over the place, and suffering huge growing pains, constantly changing processes without giving anything time to thrive. This was by far my worst work experience ever.

    AVOID - Toxic Leadership

    May 2, 2022 - Engineer

    Pros

Cute pups, dog puns, nice coworkers, remote work. That's it.

    Cons

Toxic Masculine Leadership Tech leads and their bosses micro-manage, gaslight (often blaming their own failures or oversights on other team-members by humiliating them in public communication channels), and bully coworkers to create "consensus" to influence technical decisions. No, there aren’t any female devs, how did you know? Ex-military “leaders” think applying concepts they learned while bombing civilians to business practices is useful rather than further alienating their overworked staff CEO's condescension and overly-familiar demeanor are inappropriate at worst and cringe-worthy at best. In a company-wide meeting, he mocked an employees’ presentation to their face. The gleeful delivery of his bullying remarks and audacity of such disrespectful behavior made myself and others extremely uncomfortable. Unqualified Staff in Decision-Making Roles Staff lack technical expertise and knowledge, requiring devs to step in and babysit basic job functions, and often make decisions that undermine productivity. Contractor Abuse The naked contempt displayed by leadership for the contractors who actually make the platform work is shocking. No Opportunities for Advancement Company structure is very siloed/rigid and hierarchical, this is not a place to grow a career. High Turnover Employees leaving creates more stress on remaining employees No Integrity Company regularly terminates employees just before they become eligible for their equity disbursements Don't believe what I have to say? Check your codebases - you'll see attributions from more devs than most startups can even hire. Here's why; devs get suckered in by empty promises from liars interviewing them, see the morass of egos and inefficiency when they onboard, stick around long enough to round out their resumes, and then leave as soon as they find a better role elsewhere. Why is this? You have bullies in positions of authority throughout the organization, and nobody wants to work with them. Terminate from the top down.

    Felt like high school

Mar 14, 2022 - Software Engineer in San Francisco, CA

    Pros

Benefits were pretty good, salary was reasonable, non-C level / non-manager staff was fairly diverse.

    Cons

They run the company like it's a 5-person startup, lots of time / money / effort spent on activities - drinking, movies, discussions, dog stuff, etc. They've got 100+ employees now. Repeatedly forcing people to socialize doesn't absolutely foster team building. There are smarter, more effective ways to accomplish that.
