I have been working at Waitrose (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good Discount
    Good Bonus
    Good Benefits
    Feeling of ownership
    Well informed
Genuinly nice people to work with

    Cons

Business feels like its in decline
    Branch Closures
    Lower bonus
    Retail changes
    Redundancies

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing, you are making steps in the right direction to combat the tough retail climate. But accept that competitors are knocking at middle Management to poach them, and accept that Partners will be begin looking elsewhere if promotional prospect doesn't improve.

I have been working at Waitrose part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Main pro is the excellent health hub. They really care about your health and wellbeing and don't discriminate against disabilities etc. They are good at making reasonable adjustments and giving leeway for sick days if the reason is related to an ongoing health problem. This is better than any other company I've worked for including Boots and Lloyds pharmacy.

Pay per hour isn't great but the bonus scheme is good. Overtime is almost always available and in my store at least we are never short staffed.

Generally a good environment to work in. 15% discount after 3 months on food, and generally a lot of reduced food at very low price at the end of the day is another bonus.

Management are okay at my store. There's one bad apple but apart from that it's a friendly atmosphere to work in.

    Cons

I can't think of many downsides. I find the job itself can be a bit menial but that would be the same in any supermarket. I feel that at times not enough responsibility is given to shop assistants and there isn't much room for growth. Variety of jobs can be slim and at times we are placed on the tills for 8 hour shifts while others in the same roll get other jobs to do which I find less boring.

    Advice to Management

Give your shop assistants more responsibility.

I worked at Waitrose part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good team ethic, decent benefits. As a student worker it is a good place to work: the pay is good but they don't expect you to do too much unless you want to: in which case there is scope for expanding.

    Cons

There is a bit of friction between different departments, and most people (myself included) did not understand the thinking behind some of the management's decisions

    Advice to Management

Communicate more with your staff especially about the reasoning behind big strategic decisions, such as when you move from one system to another.

    Pros

    Cons

sickness is treated as though you have done something wrong

    Advice to Management

Ask existing staff in confidentiality if they are happy in their work place without it jeopardising the way they are treated or perceived by other partners

I worked at Waitrose (More than a year)

    Pros

Good employee discount, Sunday 1.5 normal pay, very good ethics, strong customer service focus, team works like a family, good training, enjoyable job.

    Cons

Some team leaders can be harsh, the work ethic differed a lot between some members of management and some seemed to care a lot more about the staff than others, too many managers

    Advice to Management

I think it is easy to become focused just on the branch you are in, but I think it's necessary to deliver on the ethics, values, and principles of Waitrose to ensure happy statf.

I have been working at Waitrose part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits, good people to work with, decent staff night outs and that is the only good thing about the company.

    Cons

Far too many managers, unfair treatment of staff - some staff can get away with anything while other staff can't do anything right. The managers are very cliquey. Short staffed so constantly missing breaks and having to work unpaid overtime. Not getting holidays but managers always get there's. Some of the customers are very demanding and have no manners. The managers have there favourites which is noticeable even to customers( I have had a customer comment twice about the favouritism and lack of work done by managers)

    Advice to Management

Train the managers about the partnership ( my training was excellent but feel that the managers don't share the same work ethic and partnership values as the non management partners)
