    Pros

Awesome co-workers, people care about students, good support systems, paid professional development opportunities

    Cons

Pay is below average for qualifications and workload. Not compensated for double sections. Only paid for in-class time.

I worked at Wake Technical Community College part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Most co-workers and bosses were great. Also, they encourage professional development and pay for your time.

    Cons

The hourly rate only covers time in the classroom. Prep time is not included. I bought my own printer, computer, printer ink, paper, white board supplies, and everything else because there was no office for me to acquire these efficiently without copious advance planning. Whoever runs the college would not let us work beyond 20 hours a week because they were angry about Obama care--but I didn't get mad at Obama care, instead, I just thought they were just cheap jerks.

I have been working at Wake Technical Community College full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good professional development opportunities, relaxed work culture (in my department), friendly staff. I love the North Campus.

    Cons

They are literally always changing something at this school. New policies, procedures, and technology hit quarterly.

I have been working at Wake Technical Community College full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The people are fantastic, some of the best colleagues I've had the opportunity to work with. Lots of professional development opportunities. Monthly leave earnings. Making a difference in students lives.

    Cons

The focus on money and number served in con ed is affecting the quality. Administration doesn't seem to trust the people they hired to do the work. Administration changes the processes and expectations constantly and do not communicate with the staff. They let you know when you screwed up, but not how to do things correctly to begin with. No room for growth. Job duties consistently added for the high performers with no reward, promotion, or pay increase. Low performers are accommodated, not reprimanded or held accountable, while the extra workload is handed off. No flexible work schedules.

I worked at Wake Technical Community College full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great students and faculty. Good potential for professional development and promotion for instructors.

    Cons

My department head was a nightmare to work for. She is known throughout the college for being difficult to work with and being a bully. Poor senior management is the only explanation as to how someone like that could be with the college 20+ years.

    "Disability Support Services"

I have been working at Wake Technical Community College full-time

    Pros

Working with some people who are very good at their job, willing to collaborate, and their goal is to help the students as much as possible. Having full support of the administrative staff to explore opportunities with professional development and leadership.

    Cons

Working with people who do not want to do their job, who malign you and the department at every turn. Unfortunately, there are a small number of employees who gossip and create a toxic work environment for those around them. These people complain to HR whenever they are asked to actually do their job, and, it seems, their goal is to get paid without actually doing their job. In turn, HR does not do anything to help the situation and it has become an environment where the few have damaged the many.

    Pros

Each year the culture of the organization gets better and better. The focus on work-life-balance is a plus. Opportunities for professional development and promotion are available.

    Cons

Some departments in the college are slow to embrace work-life-balance options.

I have been working at Wake Technical Community College

    Pros

Very highly rated college, with lots of opportunities for professional development, and mostly highly-motivated students. Recommended if you want to practice teaching skills in a college setting.

    Cons

The hourly rate does not really reflect the effort that is needed to do the job well, i.e., you are paid for contact hours; however, the time commitment to prepare class, deliver lectures, and grade student homework usually exceeds the number of hours listed on your contract.
