Former Employee - Customer Service Manager in Edmonton, AB (Canada)

I worked at WalMart Canada full-time

    Pros

Co-workers are mostly friendly and helpful. Full time employee, able to get benefits. Depending on the area some part-time employees are scheduled for full-time hours.

    Cons

Long hours on feet, low wages. Some Assistant managers are lazy leaving maybe one or two to do all the work. They don't help out when required. Sometimes pages for duty manager goes unanswered.

    Advice to Management

Review your management team, look to promote internally to motivate and keep staff instead of always recruiting from outside.

    Pros

    Strong team
    Fast paced
Talent and commitment are recognized and rewarded

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Spread the salary out so there isn't such a gap between hourly and salaried associates

I have been working at WalMart Canada part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Opportunities for extra shifts on cash (there never seems to be enough cashiers)

"Fun Friday's" sometimes we get the chance to wear something other than funeral clothes!

Once past your 3 month probation they lighten up on the dress code, I went from wearing dress pants and plain tops to black jeans and a graphic hoodie. (Could just be our management but I've seen it at other stores as well)

There are draws every once and a while for random prizes (microwaves, DVD players, iPods etc) for employees to win

Free food and treats on "20 associate accident free days" "30 customer accident free days" and cake at the end of every month for the birthdays of that month

$4 for every MasterCard you sell, not that I've ever tried to sell any but I've heard it can add up quick from the cashiers selling 3-5 a day

    Cons

    Discount is only 10%

The store has multiple "SWAS"s (store within a store) where you're expected to do the jobs of multiple departments! example, I work in the fitting rooms so on top of putting all the clothes away, straightening the tables etc (which I'm fine with) we have to cover breaks of our coworkers within our SWAS which would be the jewelry department and sometimes the shoe department. So if it's just me in the fitting rooms I'll be paged over to the jewelry counter so I'm running back and forth having to open showcases for customers, changing watch batteries, having them try on 1000 different rings and then being paged back to the fitting rooms to open doors for customers (very unhappy ones). The managers are all aware of this but don't seem to do anything about it! Loss Prevention gets mad if we leave the fitting room doors open so there's no real solution to it! If no one is in one of the other departments we have to answer the customers phone calls which is useless because we don't know enough about the shoe or jewelry department to help anyone!

They expect all of the sales floor associates to learn how to use the tills unless you absolutely refuse to. Almost daily the till trained associates are paged when it's super busy (lunch time, weekends etc) to help get the lines down and by the time we get back to our departments it's a mess! Very few of the CSM's appreciate our help and will pressure the hell out of the cashiers to sell the MasterCard!

Depending on your coworkers, you might find days where you aren't getting all of your breaks

    Advice to Management

There should be at least 2 people in each department so they can cover each other's breaks or if one calls in sick at least the other will be there.

Check in on your department every once in a while, ask us for suggestions!

I have been working at WalMart Canada part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pretty much as many hours as you want, you get your breaks, free coffee.

    Cons

Little effective training, inconsistency in CSMs from shift to shift, insensitivity to unreasonably heavy work loads and timelines, and unreasonable pressure to sell Mastercard apps. This causes stress and general disappointment resulting in low morale. Staff room is physically uncomfortable and uninviting. While maintenance tries to keep the store clean, corners are filthy, and bathrooms usually need servicing. In some instances, broken or outdated equipment and tools.

    Advice to Management

Train your trainers and CSMs. Hire sufficient staff. Review and adjust wages. Have everything cleaned properly on a regular basis. Keep equipment up to date and in good working order. Provide better air quality. Consider a more comfortable staff lounge area.

    Pros

Loved the people, loved the crazy customers,

    Cons

Micro managed way too much. I am an adult I know my job, I don't need someone asking me every five minutes what have you done today.

    Advice to Management

Babysit the teenagers not the adults. Hire people who treat you like an adult. Make sure you don't have to teach them to be human.
