I have been working at Walmart full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Various Career Options, Mobility encouraged, Access to Leadership and Visibility in daily work

    Cons

Systems, culture sometimes makes it hard to have difficult, frank discussions

    Advice to Management

Change the annual merit increase process so pay raises other than minimal cost of living adjustments are possible without changing positions. This would help to create more longevity in role.

I have been working at Walmart for more than a year

    Pros

Walmart has a great culture based in its basic beliefs and values of integrity, respect, service and excellence. It's great to feel like a valued member of the team dedicated to Walmart's mission to save people money so that they can live better. There are many opportunities to advance your career at Walmart. Because the company is so large, you can find something in almost any field of your choosing, and change... fields without changing companies. The work is extremely meaningful - even small impacts represent huge savings on the bottom line or revenue increases on the top. Compensation is very good for the area.

    Cons

Bentonville can be a little dull if you are used to living in larger cities, though recent development in downtown and elsewhere has helped to bring a lot of the bigger city conveniences to the area. Walmart is serious about its mission and you should be, too. There will be short deadlines and long days. If you don't like a high-stress environment, this may not be the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Keep working on the turnaround with efforts to win the future of retail.

I have been working at Walmart full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I love working for Walmart. Everyday, I go to work to help people save money so they can live better. I've never seen a company so organized and dedicated to employee training and development. They constantly organize networking events. They create opportunities for lower level employees to present to the highest levels of the company. They are constantly discussing how to help employees advance their careers. ... The work is challenging, and although normal working hours are longer than other companies (730-530), there are rarely requirements of working outside those hours. The company is incredibly innovative, and moves extremely quickly, especially for its size.

    Cons

The longer-than-normal working hours. The constant unfair negative press the company gets. Also, the company tends to be managed with a very top-down approach. The leadership style utilizes the "burning platform" too often. Leaders light the platform on fire without really understanding how or if the company can put it out.

    Advice to Management

Gain more alignment across functions before embarking on big initiatives.

I have been working at Walmart full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There is lots of opportunity at Walmart. Even 3% growth at a giant company creates more positions than at a fast growing mid-sized company. There is a reasonable amount of ability to switch to completly different skill sets within Walmart. You are given a ton of opportunity to grow and learn as well as quality training in your field. The scale of what we do is huge. Harasment is not tolerated. Pay... is good, especially when you consider how cheap it is to live in Bentonville, AR. Bentonville has great public shools, inexpensive quality housing, low crime, and great outdoor activities.

    Cons

The company strategy is to provide things as cheap as possible. This means you will work on more than seems possible for one person, and management generally only wants good enough. We generally don't have the time or patience for getting things perfect. This also means the work environment is literally old warehouses with cubicles. Don't expect any frills in travel or work conditions. In addition, this means you... will hear negative things about Walmart from many people when you travel away from Bentonville. Bentonville has very few of the activities you would find in metropolitan areas, such as concerts, nightclubs, interesting groups to join. This is somewhat overcome by a world class museum and a college town about 30 minutes away. The town and company is highly concentrated with evangelical christian culture mixed with many mormons they have recruited from Utah. In addition, it is such a small town that almost every time you go to the store you run into someone from work. This makes life seem almost like living in the town from Stepford wives. Everyone at corporate is required to be at work by 7:30am.

    Advice to Management

Shift work schedules to 8:30 to 6:30 instead of 7:30 to 5:30

I worked at Walmart full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The pay was great, and I always felt secure in my job standing. There's many benefits to working for corporate Walmart.

    Cons

Throughout working at walmart, I always felt as if I could have done more.Although I from a first-hand perspective understand how we contribute, this is one of those companies where you will never be satisfied.

    Pros

Lot of opportunities to grow, learn and contribute with respect to short term and long term projects. WMT gives responsibility to deal with complex projects and trusts you to make the right decisions. The business side of the company is a fast moving spaceship. IT side of the business is a slow moving ship.

    Cons

Work life balance, office is very old and management is old school

I have been working at Walmart

    Pros

Walmart has a diverse and extensive career opportunities. Compensation is competitive to the industry standard. Open door policy throughout the organization.

    Cons

Work life balance is not good especially if you travel internationally. Direction from leadership change constantly due to changes at the top.

    Advice to Management

Walmart needs to go back to it's root as established by Sam Walton. Deviating from it has hurt the U.S. segment performance.

    I worked at Walmart

    Pros

Challenging and rewarding work. Recent years have improved compensation over those even as little as a decade ago. Desire to do the right thing. Rich Cultural history.

    Cons

People make the difference, and not always for the better. There are too many self serving managers in a culture that was founded on the principle of servant leader. This results in too much politics with too many managers focused only on milking the cash cow. Perpetual change is the norm at WM. Often this leads to a disproportionate amount of white noise. Diversity gone wild.

    Advice to Management

take a tip from Costco, transient shareholders are not the only people who matter. Get your arms around what change is most important and focus on implementing that before moving onto the next greatest change.
