I worked at Walmart full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are decent, quarterly bonus possible, employees can feel like family.

    Cons

attendance is on a point system. if you miss one or two days, you cant turn in a doctors note to have the points removed. if you hit three days you need more time, you have to file a LOA! Its helpful but its a nightmare to get completed and approved. They do not care about employees. as you see in the news these days installing more self checkouts (their plan is to be almost rid of ALL cashiers), laying off thousands of people and forcing comanagers to downgrade is ridiculous. they are shrinking people down because they want to streamline their ONLINE shopping.

    Advice to Management

no advice to management except i know you worked your butt off to get where you are and a lot is on your shoulders, but YOU should stop and actually LOOK at your employees. they are people, trying to keep their family fed. dont look at them like they are numbers. learn their names, that gives them more respect to you.

I worked at Walmart (More than a year)

    Pros

The majority of the store asst. managers were great. When the scheduling Matrix had me down for 32 hours on in the morning instead of 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. They would go into the computer and fix the error. Or when I decided to be home for Thanksgiving, Christmas dinner they had no problem with scheduling me form 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

    Cons

The associates who shove their work onto you, spread rumors, gossip and go over their coffee breaks and lunches and the bullies. Lack of team work.

    Advice to Management

Train those who want to to do mods and price changes with department heads so they can get the job done and on time. Not just a chosen few favorites. Don't lock people into the position they were hired into do. Especially if they are Senior Citizens will to learn and not just as back up cashiers, make it an option if the floor sales persons wants to train for back up cashier not a forced situation. Many people don't like it and are not comfortable on them.

I worked at Walmart part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible Hours during school. Loved my coworkers and management and were very supportive of my career path. You get out what you put in... if you're a great employee with great work ethic you are well appreciated. Free meals and time and a half on Holidays. 10% Discount always and a bigger discount for Holiday shopping.

I started off in the Toy department but I also learned sporting goods, electronics and photo lab.

    Cons

Like any retail store, Holidays are rough. Customers treat you with disrespect so you just need to maintain good customer service.

    Advice to Management

Thank you for the career opportunity and being flexible with my school schedule. I have since graduated with my bachelors degree and am pursuing a job in my desired industry!
