"Terrific company, but prepare to work hard"

I have been working at Walt Disney Company full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The Walt Disney Company stands for so much of what families and America loves. Family entertainment along with Marvel and Lucasfilm. Terrific franchises and there is always something exciting coming down the pipeline. There are a WIDE array or areas that you can apply your expertise. You can absolutely make a difference provided that you raise your hand and take on the projects that others deem difficult or messy.

    Cons

Due to the high demand of candidates seeking positions here, the pay is not top tier and it is difficult to get your foot in the door. Troll LinkedIn and reach out to Cast Members and invite them to coffee. Be relentless about being interviewed and work to have others give you recommendations. Once you're on the inside, constantly keep your eye on the DisneyCareers.com site if you would like to expand your role.

I worked at Walt Disney Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If you are hired from outside the company you will be paid what you are worth. Great options for health benefits & 401k opportunities. If you like Disney you will enjoy the comp pass & silver pass perks.

    Cons

If you start with WDW a young age/right out of college you are financially punished for your loyalty of only working at WDW -numerous managers will tell you to leave WDW and come back after you have worked somewhere else a couple years. One manager who had been at WDW 7 yrs longer than me made $26k less than me for the same job because she worked at WDW since graduating college. If you have a salary sales job, most managers expect you to check your work email 24/7 and be available for any client/cast member work call 24/7. WDW is so large there is no one to hold directors/managers accountable for hiring practices, i.e. hiring their best friends or reorging their dept to bring in their friends -or favoring a few specific clients who are their personal friends. No one says or reports anything because everyone knows if you do they will get rid of you. I saw it happen numerous times.

    Advice to Management

Nothing will ever change. The entire time I was there - middle & upper management always fooled the highest execs to how things really were with their cast members/in their depts. Cast member knew and still know better than to speak up because you would lose your job or your manager and/director would make the cast members life (both hourly & salary) so miserable they would quit. Salary cast members would even joke among themselves when they would watch clients go through WDW best practice classes how it was such a shame that we don't actually practice anything what we teach in any of those classes but pretend we do. It's a shame -the company is all about family to the guest except when it comes to its cast members.
