    Cons

A lot of hours worked. Coal mines have a certain amount of danger.

    Advice to Management

Doing a good job but a little Top Heavy!

I worked at Walter Industries full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I loved my time at Walter Energy. I was employed there for 7 years as an underground electrician. Work was dirty, hot during the summer and cold during the winter. I made a lot of good friends, and learned more than I can even remember. If they ever get back on their feet. I would highly recommend them.

    Cons

Other than the fact that you are spending a good portion of your life underground, none really. The six days a week gets old, but the money makes up for it.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing, good times come and they go. The ground level management at #7 west is outstanding.

I worked at Walter Industries full-time

    Pros

    Very supportive (IT) management.
All staff that I worked with (either US or Canada) were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.

    Cons

There were some internal 'power struggles' (at head office) but they didn't impact me or my co-workers in Canada.
Unfortunately, coal prices kept dropping so eventually WLT filed for chapter 11

    Pros

Freedom to appply many different creative solutions. The culture their is the type of atmosphere that is very helpful with my profession. I am also allowed to approach most projects with a level of say so.

    Cons

Lack of understanding from within about the different roles neccesary to accomplish certain task. Also having to act as an administrater 30 - 40 percent of the time slows my engagements down.

    Advice to Management

Implement a CIO who has somewhat been in the trenches. Allow the department too carefully choose employees with different specialized skills to create more effective teams. Seperate development and administration for the power users who are constantly engaged in projects and enforce end users who are primarily the customer of solutions, to become more involved in all stages of projects, and not just when something is working properly.
