I worked at Walter Industries full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Corporate office was connected to the mall; so holiday shopping was convenient.

    Cons

Poor management and lack of leadership along with bad market caused the company to file for Chapter 11.

Before bankruptcy the best money and benefits I have ever had. Never had to worry about not having enough money.

Very hard work. Hostile work environment. No work-life balance. Can be killed at work at any given time.

    Advice to Management

The CEO needs to find another job.

I worked at Walter Industries full-time

    Pros

    Very supportive (IT) management.
All staff that I worked with (either US or Canada) were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.

    Cons

There were some internal 'power struggles' (at head office) but they didn't impact me or my co-workers in Canada.
Unfortunately, coal prices kept dropping so eventually WLT filed for chapter 11

    Pros

gems of Western Coal were an awesome team who slogged thru the messy takeover
Walter Energy bought the best and worst of Western Coal
Once coal comes back in market, excellent business opportunities are waiting here!
Senior management put some efforts forward

    Cons

fall out between countries made it difficult to excel when takeover was completed from Western to Walter.
KC took his key personnel and left the balance of the team to fend for themselves

    Advice to Management

    provide better HR support
