I have been working at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Commander (COL Whitmer) is great and has some lovely initiatives about uniting the institute.

    Cons

Working within govt bureaucracy takes some real patience and getting used to. Also people without qualifications or who are poor employees seem to get held onto longer than they should

    Advice to Management

Make intranet and services clear and available to all - including contractors!

I have been working at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It's great for students as there's a lot of down time in between studies. The mentors are great because they're always willing to help and will push you to be better.

    Cons

The atmosphere isn't all that great. It's a very kill or be killed attitude amongst the lab members. Lack of communication.

    Advice to Management

Utilize your student workers properly. We want as much experience as possible; don't give all the work to a select few. Equally share the work.

I have been working at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research as an intern

    Pros

Very engaging experience. I was lucky enough to work in a lab that did not require me to jump through all the same hoops as other interns. This allowed me to get a feel for exactly what it was like to work in a lab.

    Cons

It is very very bureaucratic. Going through this experience showed me that i definitely do not want to work there full time upon graduation. There is little opportunity for vertical movement; thus i will not be accepting my return offer.

    Advice to Management

Make the student do less pointless work such as the poster presentation at the end of there summer. The students do not have the time to complete any full research to make this beneficial.

I have been working at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research full-time

    Pros

    It has good potential
    Autonomy
slow pace, great if youre raising kids

    Cons

    Too much red tape
    Not enough guidance
PI's are in a more of an antagonistic position than an advising role
    No clear growth potential

    Advice to Management

Stop the blame game culture which hurts comradery and wanting to find solutions to people just doing the minimum amount of work to transfer the blame
