I have been working at Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It is amazing place to work because you get to work with a very friendly staff and be around wonderful guests. It's fun to make each guests' experience even better than the time before that!

    Cons

It can be a seasonal job and get slow during some months, but that isn't the company's fault.

I have been working at Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club part-time

    Pros

Leftovers from events are then served in the break room. The employees themselves are generally nice people and so are a small portion of the management.

    Cons

Some of the management is rude and incompetent and the high stress environment doesn't help either. Contacts are also given way too much leeway and can change a setup at the snap of a finger ten minutes before the event begins.

    Advice to Management

Stop allowing contacts to make sudden changes to the set-up of a room. If it's not what they thought it would be then they'll just have to bite the bullet. Don't punish your employees for someone else's lack of foresight. Also, stop being overtly dismissive, condescending, or patronizing towards your employees. They're the backbone to your operation. Treat them with some dignity.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Full benefits (401k, dental, health, PTO) to all full time employees including restaurant servers
Flexible scheduling to accommodate employee needs
Some advancement and lateral position opportunities

    Cons

    Consider employees fairly replaceable
    High turnover in some departments
Some promotions and accolades seem to be based on popularity over experience or aptitude
Managers may be promoted between departments without prior experience in the area

    Advice to Management

Listen to the staff, especially those who have been around for a while. Make sure managers are properly trained and know how to actually do the job that they are meant to oversee. If you make changes to how things are done, stick with them and hold everyone to the same standards.

    Pros

Great benefits and the mangers genuinely care about their employees.

    Cons

You have to act like you're second class by only being allowed to enter through the back of the hotel and you can't eat at the bull durham bar. Also, you are lucky if you get to move up in this company.

Need to put in place a system of growth for growth potential.

    Advice to Management

Growth potential should be based on qualifications, oppose to who they like

"Good place to work, not a lot of room to progress career"

    Pros

Benefits package good. Very close-knit "family" feeling. Managers (some) seem to genuinely care about their employees. With all things considered and a hotel being a 24/7/365 operating facility, there is a good balance of work/life. PTO system for time off offers a lot of flexibility with vacation times, especially during slow season.

    Cons

Benefits package has taken a hit over the past couple years, no more 401k match, dry cleaning privileges taken away, pay freezes. Upper management can be very disconnected with mid-level managers and base line employees. It's an independent hotel so sometimes policies are changed at the convenience of the operation.

    Advice to Management

Connect more with your employees, they are the strength of the success of the hotel. Sporadic surveys aren't enough to get a true vibe on the morale of the staff.
