I worked at Washington Speakers Bureau full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

WSB gives employees the opportunity to work with top thought leaders on their speaking engagements. It's a very educational place to work as you end up hearing a lot of speeches, reading speaker books, and meeting with speakers when they come in for staff meet and greets. The culture is service-focused, and employees take pride in solving problems together. We would oftentimes overcome seemingly impossible circumstances to make sure speakers show up for events.

    Cons

Because speakers are VVIPs in many cases, tensions run high when there is an issue.

    Pros

Access to the most brilliant minds in the world gives you the opportunity to learn and grow in ways that most other companies won't give you.

    Cons

Lacking innovation and willingness to change a process that's been the same for over 20 years. No loyalty from management to the employees.

    Advice to Management

Listen to what the people on the front line are telling you about how to approach the sales process and what motivates them.

I have been working at Washington Speakers Bureau full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - The sales team is for the most part of fun group of people to work with.
    - You get to meet and interact daily with world leaders and celebrities.

    Cons

    - Upper management has changed a lot recently and are currently not very supportive of the sales teams. It's a very "do it or else" attitude.
    - Unnecessary layers of management between sales teams and CEO/CFO.
    - An "us v. them" attitude between departments.
    - The recent decision to remove teleworkers from the sales staff (while still allowing all other departments in the company to work remotely) has created a lot of mistrust internally. We also lost a lot of talented people who added value to WSB and are having a hard time replacing them.
    - Very long hours and high stress for entry level position.
    - Pay is much lower than industry standards.
    - Company recently cut culture events (Christmas party, for example) to save costs.

    Advice to Management

Consider the history of WSB and what made us who we are and that a company is only as good as it's employees. Don't lose sight of this while we push for growth. Reconsider policies that will encourage good employees to stay with the company, versus forcing them to adjust to your ways. There needs to be a significant focus on improving company culture and employee moral.

    Pros

People are generally nice, leadership is very involved and cares about employees. "Unlimited PTO". Good health benefits.

    Cons

Little room for growth in the position I was in, job description and responsibilities were misleading. "Unlimited PTO" felt more like a way to guilt you into never taking time off.

    Advice to Management

Event Managers aren't really event managers, I would suggest calling the position a "Engagement Logistics Manager"
