I have been working at Washtenaw County full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits with the County are great. They are better than the majority of organizations within this County. One huge perk that the County offers is that of flexibility, they are good with allowing you to take time off when needed, and because it is Unionized, they

    Cons

There is a lot of gossiping within the departments which can impact your future career. There are several people in upper management who have favorites (who may not be the best employees based on client interactions or productivity), and this makes it difficult to get ahead in your own personal goals.

Because the County is Unionized, there are many individuals in roles (both at lower levels and higher levels) who may not be the best fit for the job, however because it is a Union, it is difficult to let go of these people.

    Advice to Management

Compensation should be based on your education, in our department there is no difference between a Masters and Bachelors level Social Worker.

Think about having the yearly reviews actually mean something, such as a raise or an opportunity for someone to discuss what they want to do in the next year, and support the employee in their goals for advancement.

I worked at Washtenaw County full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The management training, the adherence to values and mission, a compassionate workplace and strong benefits and appropriate salary/hourly wages.

    Cons

Political world that surrounds the work environment, internal complaining and bickering of some staff, misplacement of some staff in positions ill suited to her/his strengths.

    Advice to Management

Review surveys about superiors from staff working for them. Also, customer sureys and better representation of customers on boards, committees & commissions. Provide feedback loop from non-profit agencies. Focus on customer service is top priority. Second priority is employee satisfaction. Efficiency and economy of all departments should be reviewed with budget development. Also, this survey only seeks feedback from former employees back to 2010. Why?

Beyond that there are no pros to this employer.

    Cons

I worked at Washtenaw County full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

honestly i can't think of any pros, the staff had issues with me being under 50.

    Cons

They take out so much money for retirement, union dues, and random other stuff that your paycheck is like working retail. Plus if you are a lucky one who got hired in in 2012, then you also lose 3.5% of your salary in addition to the small amount of money that you make.

    Advice to Management

Realize that you were young once, and that the people under 50 are the ones who will someday take your job, train them well!
