I worked at Waste Management full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Great company
    - Decent benefits (including 401k and discounted stock purchase)
    - Decent pay, though other similar companies pay more

    Cons

    - Extremely poor management (rarely do the managers know and understand the jobs they supervise)
    - Reactive instead of Proactive (they are really good at pointing out what you are doing wrong when you're already struggling, but don't count on getting proactive help)
    - Does not value loyalty or industry knowledge (they constantly bring in people from outside to fill positions, rather than hiring from within)

    Advice to Management

Learn the jobs of those you manage. If you can't assist them in doing it, you don't belong in management.

I have been working at Waste Management full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits. Some of your co-workers you will get along with.

    Cons

Management is just letting Things Fall Apart. They do not seem to listen to their employees. And they make bad decisions. Too much temporary labor inexperienced people are being used. There is too much workplace bullying and nothing being done about it. There is plenty of favoritism. The good employees who work hard Ted 2 get the worst treatment. The only way you can get things done is to be one of the people who wants a complains all the time.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to listen more to the employees that have real ideas that may work. Employees need to stop expecting rewards for doing their job. Especially those people who are expecting free handouts. Driver teams who work together should for the most part be working together not separated constantly. Supervisors need to do a better job in making the schedules this includes keeping people who work together and get along on the same truck instead of separating them constantly. The favoritism needs to stop I believe some people get away with more than they should just because there is favoritism. People who do work hard need to be appreciated more there seems to be a lack of this most of those people also tend to get overworked and burned out some of them I do believe are currently trying to look for other jobs. There is just too much soap opera style drama in this environment and too much workplace bullying. When it comes to injuries instead of calling in District and corporate people and telling us to stop the injuries these injuries need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and find out where the common issue is many of these injuries for one I'm aware of from personal experience we're still caused because the drivers or helpers were still following everything by the book most of these injuries were due to environmental or customer issues. When certain people want to work together they should allow them to. If you are working with people who you get along with and you accomplish your job in a timely manner they should allow these people to work together. Supervisors need to stop criticizing people about their productivity when they are trying to make good customer relations with their customers. I hear time and time again about how we need to work on productivity but yet we are working on productivity and balancing it with customer service it seems like more people are concerned about productivity and doing the job quickly than worrying about making our customers happy which is the key to our success in being able to keep and renew contracts. Having good customer service is also a key in being able to get new or keep contracts regardless of whether another company is trying to put in a lower bid. And I may have mentioned this before but supervisors really need to listen to their employees we're not talking about the ones that whine and complain about every little thing but employees that actually have good ideas and suggestions. The problem is there are too many people complaining about minor issues or they just complain all the time those people who have legitimate issues and concerns that may affect their ability to do their job properly are being completely ignored.

    Pros

Great people to work with both within WM and within the automotive facilities. Can get frustrating but have management backing

    Cons

Upper management only interested in money. Expect project managers to have a college-level understanding of economics and are not willing to help out in this area.

    Advice to Management

Put less pressure on the individual project managers to do the accounting departments job. If PM's do the accounting, then why do we need an accounting department that does not do much.

I have been working at Waste Management full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Meeting new people, interactions with sites and drivers in other states, great benefits

    Cons

Communication barrier with persons outside of your home area. For example RMs and drivers in Utah (while you're in CO) know the area first hand while you're dispatching somewhat blindly.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time on the floor observing not just dispatchers/routers but more importantly the dispatch Supervisors and always that are in place.
