I have been working at Wausau Homes full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Company is committed to reaching their goals and sharing the rewards with employees who contribute. Very transparent and a family atmosphere. When new open positions become available, all employees have the opportunity to move into that position before someone is hired from the outside.

    Cons

You will be stretched to your full potential, not particularly a con for most, but if you are looking for job you can "coast" in, this isn't the place for you.

    Advice to Management

You are doing a great job, thank you for providing a place to work where we all can feel to be part of the vision.

  2. "Horribly oppressive environment - a failing (unprofitable) company operating off of a trust fund"

I worked at Wausau Homes full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

On the surface, it looks like a good company to work for - but only on the surface.

    Cons

The president of Wausau Homes (Jay Schuette) is an egotistical tyrant who has no business acumen nor does he have any talent other than spending his trust fund money on himself. He thinks very highly of himself and pretends to be a Christian. (It's all surface.) He treats employees horribly, is very volatile and has angry and violent outbursts. Not a good place to work.

    Advice to Management

Advice to the Board: If you want to see the company succeed, fire Jay Schuette (and his ego), neither know anything about running a successful business.

I worked at Wausau Homes full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people, both internal & external, were the enjoyable to work with. The customer base (builders) were very easy to work with and very appreciative of the work done for them.

    Cons

Housing market downturn has severely hurt the company, while it is struggling to regain its foothold in the industry it seems to be regain ground. Management (ownership) is a narrow vision.

    Advice to Management

Listen to all of your employees.

I worked at Wausau Homes full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Was always advancing technologies to reduce injuries and improve productivity.

    Cons

Family run business, always felt like today was the last day, never knew what to expect. Never heard good job, or thank you. Even within upper management they fed information with a wooden spoon, just enough to feed but not enough to get close enough to know what was really going on.

    Advice to Management

Reward to the people that got you there, instead of nickel raises and unaffordable insurances except to upper management.

    Pros

Revolutionary strategy for long term growth in their industry
Tremendous flexibility to grow the business
Direct involvement with customers from sales through move in
Great work environment - get to get out of the office on a daily basis

    Cons

    Industry is in a depression
Resources get tight when volume drops, and income can suffer as a result
Sometimes have to work outdoors for short periods of time in bad weather

    Advice to Management

Continue to stay focused on the "Redefining the Building Experience" strategy, and look for additional ways to grow the business (especially its income) in the down economy.

    Pros

Financially strong company. Name recognition in the mid-west.

    Cons

Owner of the company who made it successful has passed away. Two brothers have pretty much shut the company down. No name recognition in the South East.

    Advice to Management

Someone needs to be organized and provide real direction.

I have been working at Wausau Homes full-time

    Pros

They have great core values and are really invested in their employees. The people are great to work with.

    Cons

I honestly am yet to find a downside with working here. Some are concerned with the inconsistent housing market, but I don't see an issue.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management would be to keep doing what you're doing. Keep living by the core values and holding us accountable to them.

I worked at Wausau Homes as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

You can write your own paycheck if you have no conscience.

    Cons

If it will be hidden, codes are no issue like substitution with inferior product or unwanted changes.

    Advice to Management

the politics pendulum will swing back and eventually you ways will catch up to you. Municipalities will have to properly enforce codes and court decisions will not be bought forever and until I see significant changes, there is no way that I can see recommending this company to anyone as a career choice.

    Pros

Financialy strong company, forward thinking in relation to where they are going in the industry and the leaders/owners of the company are very qualified for the job.

    Cons

Work load is intense, but management does a very good job of leading by example. Among certain groups there is too much petty talk.

    Advice to Management

Not much advice to give, I have been very happy with the way the way the company is managed. Communication is great and the management team does a great job of creating a sense of team.
