I personally had a wonderful experience working at Waxing the City in Duluth, MN. This is a franchise location so it is a smaller business with a very family-like group of girls. The manager (Holly Lamon) was nothing short of amazing. She makes you feel seen and heard when you bring up a concern, and will do anything she can to help you in any way. I started working at this location in November of 2021, and in January of 2023 I moved to a different city and decided to relocate to a different Waxing the City location because of how positive my experience in Duluth was. This was my first job out of beauty school, I loved waxing in school but definitely did not feel 100% confident in my services and timing. I was very nervous when looking for places to work due to how insecure i felt right off the bat. Turns out that this is the ideal place to work when coming out of school because they will train you one on one, with every service, leaving you feeling extremely confident when you are taking clients on your own. I can’t even believe how much I have grown since starting. The team at this studio is so kind, caring, and professional. I always looked forward to going to work, which I know can be rare.

Cons

Although (at this location) I was really well taken care of financially, due to there being a huge clientele and high demand of services, we did not get any commission on retail or services. I think receiving commission would motivate individuals to reach their own personal goals more so than team goals. I believe it would hold individuals more accountable for their level of effort.

•Sometimes the owner would take clients that tip well as her own(she’s an esthetician) • Owner doesn’t stand up for clients to rude customers •Inappropriate interaction with a lot of male clients for Brazilian waxes •Paychecks fluctuate •During winter business can get really slow •Sometimes the receptionist/owner will squeeze in clients without you having enough time for it •Owner allows clients to be more than 10 mins late and still expects you to take them putting you behind •Owner doesn’t turn away inappropriate, rude, disrespectful clients •Working nights are typically expected and my location is open til 9pm!! •No significant growth beyond hourly pay •No health benefits

-The management is TRASH. -The owners (of the Spring, TX location) are new and don’t know what they are doing! -They do not protect their employees from clients in regards to clients showing up and being on time.. asking for discounts or just generally being weird (especially male clients) -If you express any sort of concern within the company management will find any way to fire you and claim it was “employee misconduct” to unemployment just to make it as hard as possible for you to survive between jobs -They require you to do all booking, servicing, rebooking, checking out and product selling with NO ADDED PAY! Not to mention commission rate is so low that it’s laughable and should almost be illegal! Over all the company is probably a decent company to work for but make sure you evaluate the location, franchisee and management heavily before seriously investing time or effort into staying with them.
