I have been working at Wayne State full-time

    Pros

Most positions allow flexible hours. Wayne State provides a health insurance program including dental and eye insurance. Tuition coverage is guaranteed by the university for a minimum 1.5 years if enrolled as a PhD student.

    Cons

Work-life balance can be difficult. No defined vacation time. Workload is PI dependent. Lack of departmental funding can limit the research opportunity.

    Advice to Management

Unnecessary administration positions should be reduced and money allocated to graduate programs and their respective departments in order to support students and respective research opportunity.

I worked at Wayne State full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Tuition; holiday closure; benefits and nice campus

    Cons

Older, experienced employees at a higher salary are often laid off/displaced/forced to retire. External candidates w/degrees from on-line/remote colleges are favored more than WSU degreed internal employees. Lots of cliches.

    Advice to Management

Hire/retain competent, knowledgable managers/supervisors; not those who "know someone" to obtain their position.

    Pros

Good pay for part-time work. Own desk space in windowed, shared office. Independence in running of classes as long as results meet expectations. Friendly co-workers. Access to copy room with full-sized fridge, microwave and coffee maker. Professional development available from university on your own time.

    Cons

Taxed on "free" parking in structure. No reviews of performance by peers or supervisors. Little encouragement of academic or professional development. Little opportunity to have informal water cooler conversation or lunch with co-workers. No community feeling with students.

    Advice to Management

Increase ability for adjuncts to share teaching history/experience with coworkers. More appreciation of independent professional development. More support when issues come up that effect department and instructors.

I worked at Wayne State (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The school of Education and Social Work are top notch. Great 401k plans and located in a great area.

    Cons

The School not about students, antiquated in regards to student success. Not enough people that think outside of the box. Failing black and brown students.

    Advice to Management

Hire based on knowledge and passion not on degree attainment. PhD's that have no ide on how to relate to the plight of urban, low income or first generation students.

I worked at Wayne State full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Complete benefits package and you can't beat free tuition for salaried employees! Might as well go for that Masters while working full-time (even if it takes you several years).

    Cons

Very little wiggle room when it comes to promotions (within your department - but WSU chooses from within across departments, so that's a plus) and raises - WSU has a strict policy for moving up both in title and pay. The pay bumps are also negligible, so negotiate for that max salary if offered the position.

    Advice to Management

Keep an open mind for doing things differently - every employee, from the director down to the part-time work-study student has something to offer.
